Do I need A level maths to get a job in finance?

I am in college and need advise if I should switch my course so I have A level maths, economics and computer science.

Thank you comment icon You will need to consult with the University you are attending to know exactly what courses comprise the required path for a Finance Program Major. You need to focus on what is required for your degree in the subject you are majoring in. Only your University would be able to inform you of that accurately. Michelle M.

You do not have to have straight A's, but you have to have a strong understanding of math and its principles. You should learn accounting and get that under control it is Central to finance. In order to get a good job accounting will be a big plus, but you will have to be able to explain mathematical principles. Good luck

I would do what you can to complete your school. Find an entry level corporate job that gives money for tuition and can help give your customer service and corporate experience. Working to pay off student loans is horrible, please do what you can to minimize your out of pocket expense. An entry level job is going to give you a foot in the door, build tenure and watch your opportunities grow. You won't get the CEO job unless you know how the things at the bottom work.
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much for the advice. I'm going to try and get an apprenticeship so they can teach me what I need and I'll do my best from there and hopefully climb to the top. kayleigh

David’s Answer

Your college grades are most important for helping you land your first job. After that, the grades become less important and your work experience is what matters. But being successful in finance will require you to really enjoy math. If you are enjoying math but just not getting straight As, that's ok. But if you don't like math subjects and that is why you are getting As, you might want to rethink a finance career.
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much for the advice! The reason I'm looking into a Finance career path is because I really enjoy problem solving which led to a liking of maths. Would a career in Finance compliment my love of problem solving well? kayleigh
Thank you comment icon Absolutely. I have had a long career in Finance and one of my favorite things about it has been I get to solve all kinds of different problems. So definitely don't give up on that career because you don't get all As. If you enjoy a class in math, keep at it and do your best. David Seides

Courtney’s Answer

Check with the university you plan to attend, as they often have specific requirements for different fields. If you're interested in finance, having higher math scores will likely be beneficial.
Thank you comment icon I'm visiting some Universities tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be able to get maths. Thank you so much for your advice. kayleigh

Emily’s Answer

No. Just make sure you pass the class. All jobs look at is that you graduated at your university. Some jobs ask for a particular GPA. If you have a job company you want to work for, go online, and fill out a job application so you can see what they ask for.

Florian’s Answer

I would say "no, but"...
So in general the grades are not as important as it sometimes seems. Nevertheless, as I am also someone who - luckily - was able to hire a couple of people, I have to admit that sometimes you get a ton of applications and you are literally just searching for any potential gap or weakness in the application to reduce the amount. I can't do interviews with hundreds of people. And during that process, if you can't convince otherwise me in the application, a grade might be the thing. But from my experience, that would really be the last criteria to look at.
