Hello Maribel,

I have heard that Sacramento is a lovely, affordable city that also has a good food scene. In terms of school, it is good that you are thinking about going to Sacramento State University. For college it really depends on your goals, situations and how the school helps you in your life. I will create a list of pros and cons of attending Sacramento State University and hopefully this information helps you figure out if this is the right thing for you to pursue. Best of luck to you!

Pros:
-Affordable compared to other universities around the area
-Diverse Programs
-Have a lot of small class sizes, which is noted for more attention to students
Cons:
-A lot of people commute to the university which can affect student life
-There have been some transfer credit issues in the past
-There may be limited opportunities outside of Sacramento or around those areas
Thank you comment icon @Maribel - Many moons ago when I was a student at CSUS, in order to hold a class you needed 6 students or more to register for it. My smallest class was 6 students and my biggest class was 74 students. @Maribel, find out how many students need to register for a class for it to be held currently so that you can anticipate whatever you register for will be held. Hello, Maribel !

I am dazzled to see your post inquiring about the beloved University that I graduated from ! I only can draw upon my experience which was many moons ago and not relevant to today, but I have kept up with Sacramento and am familiar with it's present day changes from when I lived there. Yes, I admit, I hold an endearing bias because I love Sacramento and will always hold the fondest memories of being a student there.

I will start with all of the things that I found were great. First of all, the people. I have never lived anywhere before or after where the people were as nice as the people in Sacramento. I don't know what it was - just very compatible, accepting and genuine people. But when I lived there, it was very affordable which it is not anymore. Housing is high and it has grown immensely. That is one of the negatives. Another negative is the pollen potential for allergies. I live in a Valley currently and do not experience allergies but did for two days a year in Sacramento. Some videos on You Tube do talk about this and some people get the allergies pretty bad. Okay, the last negative - the heat in the summer is unbearable. I don't know how I did it, I was young, that's how. LOL !

As for the university, I was a Theatre student and had the most comprehensive, state of the art department, courses and professors. The support on campus overall was outstanding. I hope that hasn't changed. CSUS has expanded greatly, has many health/medical related major programs and every department seems to strive for the utmost highest quality. The campus is gorgeous, not to mention the walk bridge over the American River. The campus now has a Planetarium as well as tiered parking (both of which were not there when I attended). This college offers many, many activities and events for students, too and the community is also rich for entertainment and things to do.

CSUS offers 151 choices of Majors for its students. There are videos of CSUS on You Tube which are fun to watch. I left a link below to the videos for you. Enjoy !

The dorms are small, but always looked clean. I had an off campus apartment in downtown Sacramento - great area at that time. The studio apartment was $125.00 a month ! That same apartment today is $995.00 a month. (Wow, makes me feel old, LOL !). I do have a feeling that, comparatively, Sacramento is less expensive than San Jose from what I understand.

I can't exactly say go to CSUS or not because I do not know what you'll be studying. I love everything about the university, though. Watching the videos will give you an initial idea and one dimensional "feel" for the campus. It's only a two hour drive from San Jose, so if you attend CSUS, you can easily go home on weekends. There's a convenience factor involved if that's something you'd want.

So, if you like really super nice people, have a strong immune system against pollen allergies and can tolerate very hot summers, I'd say go for it as it's also less expensive than San Jose. It's 27% less expensive. If CSUS has your Major and you enjoy a paradise of a campus, yes, CSUS is for you.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best ! I left my heart at CSUS !

Thank you comment icon WOW!! Those housing prices are crazy! It's good to hear about some personal experiences here. I only visited Sacramento when I was living in the Bay Area, but I absolutely enjoyed the vibe. Karin P.
Thank you comment icon Yes, and my car insurance was $33.00 a month. Glad you were able to visit Sacramento. I used to venture to the Bay Area - mostly San Francisco - when I lived in Sacramento. Loved it, too ! Michelle M.

Hi Maribel,

Sacramento is a lovely city, not too big and not too small. You'll be close to outdoor activities as well as to the Bay Area for big city flair. It's not too far from home, which you might see as an advantage or a disadvantage. The school is in-state for you, so tuition is relatively low.

University of California, Sacramento, is a not so selective public school with an acceptance rate of 94%. The SAT of accepted students is 880-1100, and the ACT range is 16-24. About 70% of students receive aid, 50% receive Pell grants. The average cost after aid $11183 per year. The retention rate after 1 year is 81%. The graduation rate is on the lower side, which is a bit concerning (10% after 4 years, 56% after 6 years (?), 71% after 8 years). I left some links for you below if you want to go further into the school information.

I would recommend that you figure out what you want to major in before you look at colleges and programs. If Sac State has a good program for your future plans, it's a good school for you. There are several information sessions coming up in October and November that you can attend to get more information. If you are able to, you should also plan a campus visit.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Thank you comment icon Great information about my alma mater, Karin ! The statistics have changed from the olden days since I graduated from California State University, Sacramento. It was also cute to see someone who didn't go there refer to it as Sac State ! LOL ! Michelle M.
