What is the best way to accumulate money for college in a short period of time?

Due to family crisis, I am unable to pay for my upcoming school year at my university. It's getting to the point where I may have to unenroll from my university and take a gap year. I'm in love with my university and all the opportunities I have been awarded. I am unable to file for grants because of income, and I have not been awarded many scholarships. I really would love to go back to this university to achieve my dream goal of becoming a cosmetic surgeon. I would be the first doctor in my family and it is my long time dream to repay my family for everything they have done for me. How did/do you all get money in a short period of time to pay for schooling when you have no other options? #medical-school #college #money #crisis #money-management

Hello Ashlyn,

I do hope that everything works out for you and your family. Paying for college is a major concern for many students. It becomes very stressful when life events make it even more difficult to pay for college. In a crisis the best advice I have give to students is for them to speak with financial aid department to discuss what options they may be eligible for. Some universities, for instance the one I work for at CUNY, offers what is know as an "Emergency Grant." This is a financial help that the university offers to students who are facing financial troubles due to unforeseen circumstances. It would be a good idea to speak to either the financial aid office or maybe even Student Services to see if there is something like this at your school. I would encourage you to continue to apply to scholarships. Many students do not like the idea of having to take out a loan in their undergraduate studies but this is also an option for you to discuss with your financial aid office.

I wish you luck, and hope that you can continue with your studies.

Best,

Arianna

Hi Ashlyn,

I am so sorry to hear about your family crisis, and wish you and your family the best. Are you able to work? I worked while going to school, and simply requested more hours. If you are able to, consider getting another (part-time) job to supplement any income you are receiving. Can you sell some of your things, like books, clothes, etc.? Facebook has a giant marketplace, and there are many other marketplace platforms to sell your things and make money (Thredup, Poshmark, Craigslist, Ebay, Offerup, etc.). Talk to your University's financial aid department, and see what recourses are available. You never know what doors can open when sharing your story - there may be a hidden grant, emergency funds for students in your situation, etc. Finally, reach out to your professors and/or Department. They may have funds available for discretionary purposes like student grants, scholarships for studying, etc. You never know until you ask. I hope everything has improved for you, and you are able to resume your classes soon. Take care.
