What are some useful apps/websites for college?

Hello!

I'm cleaning up my computer and my phone for college. What are some good apps/websites that students use in college? Anything from note taking to student reward apps etc.

Also, is microsoft apps better than google apps? I'm not sure which to use.

Thank you so much!

Hi Solah. For note-taking and organizing class materials, OneNote and Evernote are popular choices. OneNote is great if you prefer writing or drawing notes by hand, and Evernote is perfect for keeping lecture notes, PDFs, and web clippings neatly stored. For assignments and deadlines, apps like Google Calendar or Microsoft To Do can help you stay on track. These tools send reminders and help you manage classes, exams, and personal tasks efficiently.

When it comes to studying and research, Google Scholar and Grammarly are extremely useful. Google Scholar helps you find academic papers, and Grammarly helps you check your writing for grammar and clarity. For group projects and file sharing, Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive make it easy to share documents and collaborate with classmates.

As for whether Microsoft or Google apps are better, it really depends on your preferences and what your college uses. Google apps (like Docs) are web-based and great for real-time collaboration. Microsoft Office apps (like Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) offer more features and work well offline.

Hi Solah,

Great question and good thinking on cleaning up your devices before college! Having the right digital tools can make a big difference in staying organized and productive. Here are some apps and websites that many college students find useful:

Academic Tools:
PapersOwl Plagiarism Checker – A quick way to ensure your work is original before submitting assignments.
Scribbr Citation Generator – Super helpful for creating accurate citations in APA, MLA, or Chicago style.

Note-Taking & Organization
OneNote (Microsoft) – Great for organizing class notes with sections and tags.
Google Keep – Simple and fast for quick notes and reminders.

Time Management
Google Calendar or Outlook Calendar – Both are excellent for scheduling classes, study sessions, and deadlines.
Todoist – A clean and effective task manager to keep track of assignments and personal goals.

If your college provides free access to Microsoft 365, I’d recommend starting there. But Google Workspace is also fantastic, especially for group projects.

Also, if you already know what area you're planning to major in, feel free to share it! There are some specialized tools that could be incredibly helpful depending on your field. For example:

ProjectLibre – Great for project management students; it helps you create Gantt charts and manage schedules.
WSCAD – Ideal for electrical engineering; it offers tools for creating electrical schematics and even provides a free student version.

There are many more tools out there tailored to specific majors, so I’d be happy to recommend others once I know your focus.

Wishing you all the best as you start this exciting journey in college!

Don’s Answer

Hello Solah,

There are many different apps and websites that are useful for college. For me, I have used different apps like Grammarly, Quizlet, Blackboard, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Calendar, Handshake, Google Drive and will probably use more in the future. Depending on what college you go there might be more apps that would be suggested for what you take in terms of classes. I have not really used many Microsoft apps during college and don't know if it is necessarily better. Hope this advice was helpful and would definitely suggest for you to do more research in terms of options!

Hello,

There are several apps available to use depending on what you are looking for. For grammatical and spelling check I use Grammarly, it has always been resourceful as I have used this tool for several years. If you are looking for a way to cite your sources, I would use References over Citation Machine. References.com seems to be more accurate and up to date. For general studying or review, Quizlet is great and so is CourseHero. Both offer flash cards you can use for studying, or you can also create your own flash cards.
