There are so many self training out there media in youtube.com, LinkedIn, Certstaffix Training, and many more. The best thing is to find a quick trade school, if you don't want to go to a university. Get certified and get your portfolio and demo reel ready. Your portfolio should have your best work, particularly pieces relevant to the company's style, ready to present or discuss. Research any company you apply to before going. Prepare for questions that may be asked.

Hello Mason,

There are many different things that you can do to gain experience and improve on your skills when it comes to 2D animation. You can do things like learning the basics of animation, take online courses, consider getting a degree, improve your drawing skills, look for jobs/internships and practice everyday. Hope this helps!

Wanna get into 2D animation with no skills? Start small and keep it simple — learn the basics, use free apps like FlipaClip or Krita, and practice short clips every day. You don’t need to be a great artist — just stay consistent and improve step by step. Progress comes with time. Good luck

Phill’s Answer

Hey Mason,

It is great to hear that you are looking to get into 2d Animation. With or with out skill does not matter. What matters is if you have the will and passion to get as skilled as you want. It is all done with determination and hard work.

It would be a good idea to work with analog, pen and paper, as well as digital. You can start with practicing basic geometric shapes, shading, and perspective. You then can start to draw still life objects and work on figure and motion studies. You can also practice drawing your favorite characters from animations you already watch. As you are doing this, you can practice the same things on a tablet so that you can progress at both of them. It is ideal to know both. I would also recommend getting a tablet screen protector that has a paper feel to it.

Best of luck on your journey!

I would suggest going to college to study graphic design. There are shorter programs too, but having a degree can be really helpful. For example, General Assembly in NYC offers a 4-month program, and there's also the Art Institute. It's also a good idea to check out tools like Figma, as they are widely used today.

Wong’s Answer

Hi Mason. You don't need to be an artist or have expensive tools to begin. What matters most is your interest and your willingness to learn step by step. First, you need to learn the basics of animation. Animation isn't just about drawing, it's about movement, timing, and storytelling. You can find many free tutorials on YouTube that explain these ideas in simple ways.

Next, you need to choose a free or beginner-friendly software. Then, focus on learning to draw simple things consistently. You don't have to be a great artist to animate, many amazing 2D animations use simple or stylized art. Try sketching basic characters, objects, and facial expressions. Use free online drawing lessons or follow beginner YouTube channels. The more you draw, the easier it becomes to bring your ideas to life.

All the best.

Hello, Mason !

In order to become a professional Animator, you would need the education, training, experience and even an academic path for a college degree would be appropriate. You will need skills. It's not a field in which you just jump in not being familiar with how the business is run or having the skills and creativity that is required. College or film school would prepare you for this exciting career.

As mentioned in your other posts, you're learning some programs now and that is awesome and you should continue with it throughout high school. You also mention that you do plan to go to University to perfect your craft and that is the perfect path for you to take.

You can start thinking about Universities with a strong Film Department or Film Schools. You should go through a Film path for Animation because it is a strong Degree that will open doors in this competitive and diverse career. You can always do animation. A couple of Film Schools where you live are the Griffith Film School in South Brisbane and The Queensland School of Film and Television in Annerley. Visit them to have an orientation and tour and ask questions you may have. I am suggesting Film School because a Degree in Film will carry weight if you apply for employment at animation studios, film production companies, television studios or video companies.

TAFE Queensland film and television studio in Mt. Gravatt offers training in pre- and post-production. It is going to start to be very important that you begin your learning in person, on site around other film and animation professionals.

Queensland University of Technology in Kelvin Grove is also someplace that you should go for an orientation and tour. They offer film and screen programs. And if you are still in secondary school, find out if there are any graphics or art classes that you can still take, as well inquire about video production classes if your school offers them.

For a collection of your work (portfolio) you can simply create a You Tube Channel. Each time you complete an animation video, upload it to your channel. You can give people the URL to your channel so they can watch your videos. You also can consider doing volunteer work at some animation studios where you'd be around professionals and understand how studios and production is done. Places to offer volunteering are Fotomedia – Animation Studio Brisbane, Ravel Agency – Animation Studio, Explanimate, Pixel Zoo – Animation Studio, Red Kite Design, and Paramount Video Productions. Fotomedia, Ravel Agency, and Explanimate are all located on Hope Street or nearby. Pixel Zoo is also based in Brisbane and specializes in 3D and 2D animation.

Going to college or Film School will provide you with opportunities, knowledge and contacts for this wonderful career. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
