When it comes to ocean conservation, how can I start or contribute to something that feels like it is making a difference rather than being insignificant?

I am a college freshman, and my main career goal is to spend my life cleaning the ocean.

If you want to make a difference in ocean conservation, the best place to start is by getting involved with groups that are already doing the work. That’s how I began. Before I started my own small nonprofit focused on caring for the earth, I connected with other environmental organizations and volunteered to support their missions. I helped with cleanups, joined events, and learned from people who were already making an impact. Doing that showed me that small actions really do matter, whether it’s reducing plastic, recycling correctly, or sharing what you’ve learned with others. You don’t need to do something huge to make a difference. Starting small, staying consistent, and supporting existing efforts is a powerful way to help protect our oceans.
