Study tactics to help stay focused in nursing school?
I am going to be entering nursing school after graduation in June and I want to be as successful as possible. In college, I know there are things such as events and friends that can become a distraction from studies and I want to know how I can fully focus on my studies to reach the goal I am determined to complete.

Hi! A few things that have worked for me to stay focused:
Time blocking. Set aside specific time (put it on your calendar) to study or work on class assignments including what you want to study. This would look something like; Read pages 1 - 30 for English Lit. By setting aside the time you're setting aside the time to study, which increases your chances of actually doing this, and what you want to do during that scheduled time so you don't spend 15 minutes of your 30 minute time block trying to figure out what you should do.
Turn off notifications. Put your phone on do not disturb. You can even schedule times when do not disturb automatically turns on.
If you need to do your work at the computer, do your work in a new window or a different browser so you're not tempted to check your e-mail, or look at ____ website. Having lots of tabs open makes it very easy for you to get side tracked, especially if there are tabs you always have open as part of your regular activity.
All the best!

Hi Chloe. Nursing school is busy and it's easy to fall behind without a plan. Therefore, you need to make a study schedule. Pick certain times each day just for studying, reviewing notes, and doing assignments. You can break your study time into short blocks, like 25-50 minutes of work, then a 5-10 minute break. This helps you stay focused without getting too tired.
Next, you need to figure out what's most important. Some topics and assignments are more important for your success than others. Therefore, you should focus on high-priority topics first. Using a planner, checklist, or phone app can help you keep track of assignments and deadlines.
You need to eliminate distractions wherever possible. College life has a lot of things that can take your attention away, like friends, social events, and your phone. You can find a quiet place to study where you won't be interrupted. Silence your phone, log out of social media, and let friends or roommates know your study hours to minimize distractions.
Another helpful tip is to study actively. You should summarize notes in your own words, teaching a friend, making flashcards, or doing practice questions. Study groups can also help, but only if everyone is focused on learning. All the best.
