Hi Jonah,

Something to keep in mind. You are not stuck to doing one single thing your entire life. I grew up amount artists and musicians, most of whom had day jobs. My mother was a professional singer, and it takes a tremendous amount of work, talent, and luck to support yourself that way. Personally my advice is to start going down the automotive engineering route first, and play music as a hobby, if you get good enough and you join a band, eventually you may be able to be a musician full time. But it will be much easier to pay for equipment, travel expenses etc if you start working as an engineer first.

That being said, if music is truly your dream, than by all means pursue it.

Larry’s Answer

Jonah,

As you grow up your interests change but it's not a bad thing. As your situation changes you find new areas to focus your attention on.

My story is filled with zigs and zags and I'm grateful for all the different things I've done and accomplished in my lifetime. In high school I loved cars and working on them. I did car work for all my friends. I used to remove and replace automatic transmissions for a local transmission shop. I graduated high school and went to school for aircraft maintenance. After a year I quit and went to college. I changed my major 3 times beginning with Data Processing, Electrical Engineering technology then finally Mechanical Engineering technology. After graduating with my 2 year degree, I continued on to a four year school and received my degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Since then, for various life situations, I got my real estate license, worked as a sports videographer, a high school football coach, went back to school and got my aircraft mechanics license, and finally worked as a mechanic on small, 5-seater, aircraft at the local airport. I owned 2 family homes and learned how to do all kinds of maintenance on the house including plumbing, electrical, tiling, and lots of painting!

Your story is yet to be told. Don't limit yourself. Try everything that interests you. You're not going to be great at everything but I can guarantee you'll always have something to talk about. Best of luck to you. I hope you will have a zig-zag story to be proud of talking about some day.

Be well,
Larry A.
