How would I upgrade from working at a grocery store to typing code to invent video games no one has ever dreamed of making?
I currently have my application filled out for Ingles where i hope to be working once I hit the age of 16, which is an age where you will not have to have in your possession a work-permit. This is a job where I will get to know the working environment and make some money, but after that, I would like to go straight into game developing. My question is, do I need to have prior knowledge, and where will I get this knowledge from?

It's free, and it's THE engine that every other game engine aspires to be.
Download the engine and then just start making things. There are thousands of youtube video tutorials that will cover just about anything you can think of.
Have fun!

The advice above about getting access to Unreal Engine is absolutely correct: dive in and see what you can create or contribute to ... build a point of view you can bring to interviews.
If you don't have "official" experience to speak to, show potential employers your passion for the subject by taking part of community events related to gaming (e.g., local or online Game Jams) for resume bragging rights.
Have a game you love to play yourself? See if the game devs have a Discord you can join, take part in the discussion constructively, and start building your own personal network in the community.
