What kind of majors do animation (3D or 2D), or film jobs look for in their candidates, and what colleges or universities offer good programs for these jobs?

I am kinda hoping NetheRealm Studios would take me or a really good video game company.

I have been learning to animate in Source Film Maker and have done a little of Blender, the two best free programs I could get my hands on. I still want to learn more about programs that the bigger companies use such as Dreamworks, Disney, Microsoft, etc.

I don't know whether to go for anesthesiology or for something more artistic, I love video games and could work in development but I also love medical science.

How does one start out in graphic design, a form of art, or game development in a successful way? It would be hard to start a career like that without any prior connections.
