What are the necessary steps to take when starting your own real estate business and how do you start taking the necessary steps?

I'm a senior in high school taking college classes in business management. By the time I graduate high school (class of 2026), I will only have one semester left to complete my associates degree.

Rebecca’s Answer

Starting your own real estate business is a journey that begins with curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to learn. The most important first step is understanding the different paths within real estate—whether it’s becoming an agent, investing in property, managing rentals, or exploring development—so you can choose the direction that inspires you the most. From there, building a strong foundation through learning basic skills such as communication, sales, negotiation, and financial literacy will prepare you for long-term success. Gaining early exposure—whether by shadowing a real estate professional, volunteering at open houses, or taking part-time opportunities—helps you understand how the industry truly works and builds your confidence. As you grow, researching licensing requirements, developing a simple business plan, and building your professional network will give you the structure you need to move forward. With consistency, willingness to ask questions, and steady preparation, you can take each step with clarity and eventually build a real estate business that reflects your goals, your values, and your future potential.
