What is the most impactful or inspiring experience you have had while volunteering in the medical field? hashtag #Fall25?

In addition to my professional goal of becoming a nurse, I hope to give back through volunteer work as my finances allow. I plan to volunteer either on the Navajo Nation, where some of my extended family lives, or with Mercy Ships. hashtag #Fall25

I found it very rewarding to do international healthcare trips. I taught physicians in the Soviet Union (and subsequently in Russia) and China how to care for infants and children undergoing open heart surgery. A team of surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists (like me), nurses, respiratory therapists, and echocardiographers worked hard to help them develop what has become a good congenital heart program.
I have many friends who have enjoyed similar trips to many underserved parts of the world.
I have also volunteered within the U.S., but as an intensivist this was not as helpful as primary care.
