What are some tips for people who want to get into a difficult art field?
I'm an aspiring concept artist, but I'm starting off with majoring in graphic design. I'd like any help I can get from people who have had concept art jobs and the sort of pathway I'd need to journey.

Making money with art isn't as hard as people think. Making money with YOUR art is really challenging. There are lots of fields where artistic talent is valued and rewarded but they are always in service of a commercial goal. Graphic design for logos, websites, advertisements, brochures, etc. can make you a decent living. Creating experiencial events for product debuts and tours is in demand right now.
What kind of art do you want to do and what are you willing to do to make that happen? Answer that for yourself and you might find your path becomes clearer.

Making money as an artist? Yeah, that’s a tough one. One way to keep your creative life sustainable is to have a side hustle... something steady, like running a farm and growing your own food. That way, when sales are slow and nobody’s buying your art yet, you’ve still got a way to survive. Honestly, this has been the reality for artists throughout history: selling your work is always a challenge, so having a backup plan matters.
Once you’ve got that safety net... something that keeps you from stressing about how you’ll eat tomorrow... being an artist gets a little easier, though it’s still no walk in the park. To really thrive, you’ve got to sharpen your critical thinking and build a strong philosophy about life. That’s the fuel for your creativity and spirit. A good starting point is this book https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=nCYHEQAAQBAJ
Next, dive deep into art and design principles. Train your eye, study the craft, and read solid resources like this one https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=L-n_EAAAQBAJ Then start shaping a personal style that makes your work stand out. Even if your style isn’t revolutionary, make sure you’re excellent at something in your field... that’s what sets you apart.
And here’s the grind: practice nonstop. Build full projects, comics, videos, films, games, whatever fits your lane. The hard part? Learn the business side. Network, put your work out there, flex it in public, and keep moving forward no matter what.
Do all that, and sooner or later, you’ll step into your role as an awesome artist in your field.
