Hello, Zaria !

It is said that 73% of the fashion industry in general (and there are many facets to this industry) want to use Artificial Intelligence. This can mean that positions such as fashion trend analysts, merchandisers and planners, fashion marketing experts and digital marketing strategists, category/apparel designers, and technical and graphic designers could very well be eliminated if a company or fashion designer chooses to use AI, as that is the purpose of AI, to eliminate the human active work and allow a machine to do it instead.

The one facet where I do not see it needing to enter is if you want to become a Fashion Designer and choose to create without AI. You would still need to do the tactile functions such as buying the fabric you choose, feel and see, making your own patterns, sewing, altering, and fitting models. Since many fashion designers freelance, this may be one career that perhaps can stay the same. If AI can do everything, why let a human do it. But there will still be fashion designers that want to work and may not choose to involve AI. There is also a monthly fee for the AI so many may not want that extra bill. But 73% of the fashion world are said to be in favor of changing the industry by using AI.

If you are considering going into a creative field such as fashion design and having your own line and brand, your best bet to find out the atmosphere about AI would be to attend Fashion School and see what your professors say as well as working professionals that you will meet by networking - other fashion designers. I am not sure fashion design would be as fun or have the same satisfaction factors if you don't create it yourself. People can try both and see what they like better. But I definitely can see many of the fashion careers going by the wayside if AI is used. That's the whole purpose of it - and making work easy does not necessarily mean making work better or satisfying. The people invested in AI will say all good things about it and that's fine, but hopefully you'll have a choice if you're intending to be a fashion designer making your own brand of clothing and accessories. The massive energy and water needs AI requires will increase energy bills also.

If you are asking because you are concerned about having a career in fashion or if you are just curious about how much AI will replace certain careers, you'll probably find out more direct information about the status of it at Fashion School. Right now, we all have opinions about it but sometimes those thoughts and opinions are helpful if acquired by reasoning and evaluating what kind of career you want to have. Hopefully there will be a choice for you. The Fashion Industry has traditionally been a very heavy social and hands on industry, collaborative and that means people working together.

This is just my outlook and something to consider specifically for the Fashion Industry and not AI in general. I hope you look further into the fashion world to get a more exact outlook. Best wishes in all you do ! Fashion is an exciting, satisfying and rewarding career - if you do it.

Sumitra’s Answer

Dear Zaria,
AI is already reshaping fashion, but not in a way that replaces creativity, it actually expands it. In the future, AI will help designers test ideas faster, predict trends more accurately, and create sustainable materials with less waste. We’ll see more personalized clothing recommendations, virtual try-ons, and AI-assisted pattern making, but human designers will still drive the vision, storytelling, and cultural meaning behind fashion. Think of AI as a creative tool rather than a replacement. It speeds up the technical parts so people can focus on the artistic parts. The fashion industry will stay very human, just supported by smarter technology 😊
Thank you comment icon I completely agree with you, Sumitra. Zaria, from what I know of how AI supports my work, I feel AI can support and assist in many ways we cannot even understand today. All the best. Beth Kirshenberg
