How has working as a nurse changed the way you view people and the value of human life in general?

Hi! I'm a college freshman, and becoming a nurse has been my dream since I was a kid. I'm really curious about nurses' real experiences in the field.

Hello Alona,

I am not a nurse, but I’ve had the opportunity to work with nurses over the years, and I can confidently say that helping the sick get well builds courage, hope, and a changed mindset.
Before, I viewed people as who they appeared to be: some proud, some who talk down on others just to feel respected, some who come to you only for what they can get, the really nice ones, and so on.
After being exposed to the medical field, I see people differently now. I see them for who they truly are. There is something about pain that you cannot pretend through. Pain exposes and breaks human beings.
You see those you once tagged as strong beg because of the pain they are going through. The ones who ordinarily wouldn’t even talk to you because of class or status open up and tell you about the life trauma they are facing. And here you are, in the middle of it all, helping people of all calibres get well. You put yourself in their shoes and show them love and care. The greatest joy is when they bounce back, you are overjoyed. Some even become your friends. Still, expect that some may not even acknowledge your help after their discharge.
As you intend to work as a nurse, be ready to become a shock absorber, because you will encounter many attitudes. Let this never discourage you. Rather, know that you are growing too. It is building both your personality and your profession.
With this experience, I have learned that human life is very, very fragile. The strong can die in a second. Human life is more spiritual than physical. You may see someone who appears perfectly fine, and in the next moment they become incoherent in both attitude and words. A lot happens to people, which is why medical health professionals are expected to value life. People go through things they themselves cannot fully explain, how much more you, who were not present in their lives from the very beginning.
Do not conclude about people based on assumptions or perceptions. Instead, be considerate and offer professional help with a sincere heart and kindness. Give your best and do not expect appreciation in return. However, if you are appreciated, accept it and give glory to God.

Thank you.
