What are some different careers i can take up with a studio arts major and minor in communications ?

Ive always struggled with answering what exactly i want to do with my future. I dont really have a set goal in mind with what i wanna do i just know that it has something to do with Arts. I also have a great passion writing and journalism which is a career im thinking of exploring too.

Thank you comment icon Faith, A good way to start seeking out careers in Studio Arts and communications is to research what kinds of jobs entail the skills for these. Do you due diligence and research jobs and review in dept their job descriptions. That way you are not only reviewing for the job/career category but also what it will entail plus what other skills, training and experience would be required. A good place to start searching is here on LinkedIn. Under the jobs tab look up studio arts. The multiple types of jobs will enlighten you. Then look up the same under people and re view their profiles. Professionals love to share their experience and knowledge. Like how you are asking her for advice. Much of it can be right under your nose. :) If you have the opportunity to visit work places that have positions that are of interests you, do so. If opportunities arise for you to be involved in a related event, go for it. You never know until you try! Good luck!!! Hata Wailehua

Writing is a key part of any career. Think about combining your passion with a career path. Some ideas for combining arts with writing could be Public Relations, the way we discuss and promote the arts whether it be performance, film or music. Even when it comes to products that are physical or services, storytelling is a part of the offering. Sales or solution sales can be likened to journalism; how do I uncover the clients need and recommend the right solution? Creativity comes in different forms. Good luck!

Hello, Faith !

You are fortunate in that you can consider being both a Writer and an Artist. You have the ability to do both at the same time. Both are professional careers on their own. People like Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Helguera, James Agee, Jack Kerouac and Sylvia Plath have all done it and you can too.

Continue with your plan to be a Studio Art Major and make strong contacts with your local and online Art communities. The primary hub for the artist community in Skokie, IL, is The Storefront at 4051 Main Street, a brand-new art space designed to support local creatives and entrepreneurs. The Storefront serves as a central location for artists to connect, collaborate, and showcase their work, hosting events such as the Artist Networking Event. Explore and/or get involved with the Skokie Fine Arts Commission. The Village also maintains a robust public art collection throughout Downtown Skokie, including sculptures and murals, and offers resources such as the Otocast app for exploring public art installations. Also join online art communities to further explore opportunities and information.

You can also mingle with Skokie's writing community, too. Publishers Row, located at 9001 Keating Ave, Skokie, IL is a notable publisher and business hub with a presence on Nextdoor and Yellow Pages, offering services in media and news. Also in your town is Alpha Book Publisher. For writers, the Skokie Public Library hosts the "Write On! A Skokie Writers Group," a drop-in event for aspiring and published authors to workshop their writing, welcoming participants of all experience levels. There are also many Writer websites you can find by doing a search online at which you can do your writing and work up a collection. Start reading The Writer Magazine, too.

You will know exactly what you'd want to do for your career through your academic experience. In college, you will make discoveries of various fields of work, but there's no reason why you cannot do writing and create art as a professional at both. So you do not have to decide on a specific career just yet. Let your college experience inspire you. Keep in mind that Journalism would not present opportunities for your art, however. If you decide being both a Writer and an Artist would be the way to go, you may want to major in Studio Art and just take some creative writing and literature courses as single courses. As a Studio Art Major, you will have your own special artist community right there at your art department and possibly the opportunity to work in the campus gallery and, at some time, have a show of your work. The off campus community attends these events and it's an excellent way for people to get to know your work.

Explore Journalism and keep in mind that you may not have time to do your Art and that you do not always write if you work in Television. Print media, perhaps, but read up on it before making a commitment to a Media Major.

I think the best method for figuring it out is to wait until you are active in college and get inspired. From now until then, keep creating art and keep a journal to write in entering all forms of writing - stories, scenes, poetry, reviews of movies or products, etc. Join some extra curriculars for artists and writers if you are still in High School. There are wide open possibilities to being an Artist and Writer. These do not come from words on paper or thoughts, they come with being active with both of your talents and let the process unfold.

So it is perfectly fine that you haven't settled upon a career goal as yet and you don't have to make everything you like to do a career. College will be a big help to you for personal growth and self-discovery. Always be true to yourself and be open minded and be active with the two things you love - writing and art, because you can do both equally as careers. But remember what I said about Journalism as a career - it's very time consuming as a career and there's really no art involved. It also pinpoints you to one type of specific writing in which you may not have creative say in what you "have to" write.

I wish you all the best for a fulfilling future and the awesome career that you choose !
