Why are dental assistants treated and paid unfairly (with a assoc. degree)?

I'm currently in college taking my pre-requisites for dental hygiene. I will be on my second year in 2026. I've always been interested in dental. I've done volunteer work at a dental office as a dental assistant trainee. During that time, it opened my eyes to see that Dental assistants get paid and treated unfairly. To be frank, they are the ones who glues the dental office together. Without them the dental office would crumble. #Fall25

I agree assistants really do keep the office running smoothly, and a good DA is invaluable. But as an RDH who’s worked in a few different offices, in my experience, most assistants are treated fairly and are compensated well, especially considering that in most states the role doesn’t require an associate degree. Every office is different, of course, but I haven’t personally seen widespread unfair treatment so maybe that's more related to the office you've been in?

That said, I absolutely agree that assistants deserve appreciation and recognition for the work they do. A strong team is what truly makes a practice successful.

As a trainee, I think the atmosphere can be overwhelming because assistants do carry a lot on their plate. It all depends on the practice you work for. I've met some A-hole docs, managers, etc. If boundaries arent set, you can be mistreated and undervalued. So always go in knowing your worth, don't and be afraid to stand up for yourself, and don't bend over backwards for any practice, because there's too many opportunities elsewhere in this field.
Good luck with your endeavors!!
