How can I integrate sports into a future career in law?

I am committed to playing college soccer and would love to continue involving athletics in my life through a potential job. I have grown up in a family that has supported my siblings and me through our athletic endeavors, so my love for sports runs deep. I want to pursue law because I am determined to use language and facts to protect people. I have done well in my English, government, and history classes at school, and am ready to see how I can further develop these skills. #fall25

Hi Lillian! Your statement already has a strong foundation — it clearly shows your passion for athletics and your interest in pursuing law. Maybe mention a moment from soccer that shaped your discipline, leadership, or teamwork. This will make your connection to athletics feel more personal and memorable. You hint at both passions, but adding one sentence that ties them together — like advocating for athletes, or using the discipline you learned in sports — would make the transition smoother. If there’s a class, conversation, or experience that sparked your interest in law, mentioning it briefly could strengthen your message. Something like how you’re excited to explore pre-law opportunities, internships, or leadership roles to apply your skills.

DENNIS’s Answer

Hi Lillian: Several things come to mind. I played football in high school and college, ran track, played rugby, threw the shot put and was considered a good athlete. I am short so I never got a college scholarship. In law school I found that trying a case is a lot like sports. I was usually exhausted after a trial because it takes total mind and body! So that is one aspect of the law you might consider - trial work.
There is also sports law. Agents and others must be guided by laws so players do not get cheated. That's contract work and in office work but it keeps you in the sports arena. Several sports announcers are lawyers who now just announce sports.
A love of sports and the law are not mutually exclusive. You can join them together into a great career.
Good luck.

Karin’s Answer

Hi Lilian,

I appreciate your love of sports. If you want to involve sports in your career as a lawyer, sports law is a thing. You can even do a masters in sports law.

Professional sports involves contracts and trademarks and media issues that need legal attention. There are lawyers that represent injured athletes. Sports law involves many aspects of business law as well as all kinds of litigation issues.

It's also ok to keep sports as a hobby. Not everything you enjoy needs to be a job. Some things can just be for personal enjoyment.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
