I suggest starting on a med/surg floor. It’s a great place to really learn how to be a nurse. You’ll discover what you like and don’t like in healthcare. It’s the best spot for new grads to gain experience, grow, build confidence, and sharpen their skills.

Hi! Hope you are doing well.
My favorite floor was labor and delivery.
My suggestion is to follow your heart on where you want to go. My only regret early on in my career, is that I didn't follow my heart and actually never made it to the unit I started my career wanting to be on...I followed the advice of seasoned nurses and did general medicine "to better my career" but feel like I should have jumped right into the area I wanted to be in...so if you really want to learn an area or feel called to a particular area in nursing - do it!!!

Hi Chantera,
My favorite floor as a nurse has been the emergency department. I liked the variety and fast paced nature of the position, while still having the occasional downtime during the night shift.
You seem undecided yet about what area of nursing you want to specialize in. It may be worthwhile to jump into the 'float pool'. This would give you an opportunity to try different floors. But I wouldn't worry about the floor you go to as much as about what new grad program the employer has, if any. Having great support and mentoring during the first couple of years of your career will make a huge difference. Good luck to you and I hope you find your niche.
