What type of job opportunities are there for a sports management degree?

I’ve talked to some people who say that a sports management degree is similar to a business degree. I don’t know if I should get a business degree that is broader or focus on sports management. I would like to work with something that has to do with sports but don’t want to limit myself in a specific field.

Thank you comment icon Hello Ben! Your inquiry has gone through my weekly mail. I don't know very much about sport even thought I have a physic to be in sport industry. My answer will be shallow because my expertise is in Finance. Don’t worry if you don’t have everything figured out yet. Most professionals started with uncertainty too. Focus on building skills, staying curious, and taking small steps — over time, those steps add up to big progress. Hope it helps. Isida Mici

Hi Ben. I agree with the previous answers. Go with a business degree (marketing, management, finance, or analytics) and:
-Add a sports management minor or certificate
-Start sports-related internships early (even unpaid or part-time at first)
-Join campus athletics, event staff, or sports business clubs
This keeps doors open both inside and outside sports.

If you major in Business + Minor or Concentration in Sports Management, this gives you:
-A degree that works in any industry
-Credibility for sports roles
-Flexibility if sports doesn’t work out (which happens to many people, even talented ones)

Employers in sports care more about:
-Internships with teams, leagues, athletic departments
-Sales, marketing, analytics, or operations skills
-Who you know and what you’ve actually done

My brother wanted to pursue a career in sports management. He decided to study finance with a minor in sports management. You can also try to search roles now and see what careers these companies are looking for. Maybe Finance analysts or IT related jobs in the sports industry could be a better gateway to get into that unique world.

Hi Ben!

What you choose depends on your goals. If you want to work in the sports industry, it's good to have specialized knowledge in that area. But if you want a broader education that allows you to explore other fields, a degree in Business Administration is a good choice. You could also minor in Sports Management. I got a Business Administration degree, and I managed a soccer club and facility for five years. Now, I'm a general manager at a sports and fitness complex.
