After completing cosmetology school, what are some of the biggest challenges for new stylists?

I am graduating with my Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education in 2 weeks, but I have decided to follow my dream of attending cosmetology school next year. Any advice about school or the next steps after school would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there!

Big congrats on earning your teaching degree! Teaching is such a wonderful and rewarding career. It's great to hear that you're also interested in hairdressing. Having been a hairstylist for 30 years and owning four salons, I'd say go for your dreams, but it's wise to have a backup skill for the future. Hairdressing is incredibly rewarding, but not many turn it into a lifelong career. It involves close contact with people, both emotionally and physically, which some might not expect. It can also be tough on the body. While I haven't had any lasting back or wrist issues, I've seen it happen to others. Becoming a career hairdresser is more like a calling; it requires special talents that you'll only discover by trying it out. It's an exciting field to explore, especially now with so many online resources and mentors. If you're serious and talented, it can open doors worldwide and give you a skill you can use anywhere. Wishing you lots of success!

Excited for you to be a cosmetologist. Great career!

My wife is a cosmetologist of 10 years and has loved every bit of it. A lot of people go into hair not realizing how difficult it is:

-Vast majority of hairstylists quit before 2 years
-Difficult to make money unless you are a booth tent stylist
-Learning to sell is as important as your skill & technique.

Hair is a rewarding and fun career. There’s a lot of pros and people love their stylists. My wife gets a lot of love and praise from her clientele.

Just remember there are those things to keep in mind so you can overcome and become part of the small % of those who make it past 2 years.

Best of luck!
