What is the best way to get experience in the medical field?
I have a medical assistant certificate, but I haven't been able to gain experience with it. I want to gain experience while continuing my studies. #Fall25

Hello Angel,
have you tried shadowing programs or looking for volunteer work or summer internships? A lot of hospitals have shadowing programs where you can explore careers in the medical field while following a professional's daily life at work.

Angel, I recommend following Ms. Lippincott's advice. However, I'd like to share my experience too. I started in the medical field as a Pharmacy Technician at a local hospital while working on my first degree. After finishing my Bachelor's, I decided not to become a registered pharmacist. I still wanted to work in healthcare, so I chose to become a Physician Assistant after researching my options. I can't imagine working outside of healthcare.
I've always been interested in Biomedical science, but my passion is advocating for patients. Many issues are overlooked in our healthcare system. If you're considering a clinical role, start as a medical assistant, patient scribe, or CNA. This experience can help you decide your path in healthcare. Make sure to shadow professionals, research, and use all resources available to you. Good luck with your future goals.

In addition to Margaret's suggestion, consider transitioning from MA to ED Tech, which has a lot of overlap. If the clinic where MAs work isn't giving you what you want, you may be pulled more towards an ED or inpatient direction. Paramedics and EMTs also get a lot of medical experience, and allow you to interact with many types of patients. Furthermore, all of the above possibilities look good on resumes if you choose to pursue medical, nursing, or physician assistant school.
