What do you think of Delta, American, and United Airlines?

I am an incoming flight school student looking into prospective employers/cadet pathways. I already have a flight school chosen, but I am interested in CFI cadet pathways and in learning about the legacy airlines and the regionals that lead up to them, such as Envoy and Piedmont.

Juan’s Answer

Hey Lydia, great question.
All three of the Legacy carriers are great for a career in aviation. While you work on your certificates in your flight school, take the opportunity to sign up for as many cadet programs as you can as quickly as you can. Many of them have a requirement that you have to have a private pilot certificate before applying but doing so sooner will help out. Having your name out there will give you more options as the regional carriers, where you would build flight time for the legacies, prefer hiring from their cadet programs.

Juan recommends the following next steps:

Work on certificates and ratings (PVT-CFI)
Apply to cadet programs as soon as able
Attend information sessions from these regionals
Build flight time to ATP mins (1000 hrs for 141 school, 1500 hrs for part 61)

Wayne’s Answer

Lydia - I would recommend try and arrange a visit to each of the airlines.
Then when you have made a decision, research the internet and you should be able to find out what flight schools each airline is affiliated with and attend that flight school. Also if you can get hired for any position with the airline then start attending flight school they may pay for some of your flight training once you have received your pilots license.
Example here is Alaska Airlines: https://careers.alaskaair.com/career-opportunities/pilots/pdp/
Here is the lead in to the website
Ascend Pilot Academy aims to provide aspiring pilots a simpler, more financially accessible path to becoming a student pilot. Enrolled cadets will be eligible for access to financial aid, and a stipend up to $27,000 upon signing on to work for Horizon Air.
Please note: In order to apply for Ascend, you must hold a First Class Medical certificate. Your application will not be accepted without this.
Best regards on your journey
