Abiola....These are really good thoughts to have ahead of time, but I'd like to help you relax and understand that you don't have to "know" which specialty you will have as a career. As many have said, there are so many paths through and attached to nursing that your options will be many and you will no doubt be drawn to experience different areas of nursing.

Now to your specific questions. While in school, you will rotate through different specialties and there will be a few that you can choose to experience. This will help you learn of your comfort level with different levels of care for different demographics of patients. For instance, you may be drawn to pediatrics, elder care, emergency or psychiatric specialties. Fully embrace all of these experiences for they will all add to your skill set and confidence in your knowledge and abilities.

Even when you graduate, I would suggest you enter your most comfortable area of care, and while there, continue to interact with other specialties and learn what path/s you may to continue on as your career progresses.

One last thing that I wish I had understood when I was younger. No matter your age, 18, 30, 50, or older, it is NEVER too late to take a new direction or add another skillset. Continue to learn throughout your career and remember why you are there.

The great thing about nursing is that you can try different specialties. I would suggest that while you are in school and doing various activities, look for intern programs within your local healthcare network and inform them of your interests in the specific areas.

As you learn more about nursing and get real-life experience, you'll find many specialty areas you can explore. As a student, your opportunities might seem limited, so make the most of your clinical experiences and stay open to new possibilities. Some nurses stick to one area they love, while others like to try different things. The great thing about nursing is that you can find the perfect fit for you.
