Hi Lily!

First, I wish to thank the person who came up with this concept. It's not just important, but also powerful, to want to use your personal experience with depression to help other teenagers. One of the best foundations for a mission-driven company is lived insight, which is what you're starting from. However, it's okay to be unclear of where to start. A great deal of major companies begin modest, purposeful, and focused rather than fully formed.

Clarity is a better place to start than scale. Specify the exact problem you are solving and for whom before worrying about advancement or promotion. Are you developing psychoeducation, crisis referrals, peer-to-peer support spaces, or resource navigation, for instance? It's important to be clear about what you can and cannot offer teens seeking online mental health care because it involves a lot of responsibility. Instead of offering therapy, many prosperous organizations start by establishing themselves as a bridge that connects teenagers to professional resources, trusted listeners, and support.

Next, consider a minimal viable nonprofit. You don't immediately require a complete platform or legal standing. Moderated Discord servers, private Slack groups, Google Forms for sign-ups, and Instagram for outreach are some of the tools you can use to test your idea. Before spending time and money on infrastructure, this enables you to assess demand, learn what kids actually use, and improve your strategy. Proof of influence should come after growth, not before it.

When it comes to counselors and safety, this is a crucial turning point. Establish clear boundaries, consent procedures, and crisis referral channels if you work with certified experts. Make significant investments in monitoring, training, and safety procedures if your model involves peer assistance. This safeguards the teenagers you assist as well as the volunteers who help them. Nonprofits in the mental health field that take risk management seriously from the start are the ones that expand sustainably.

Lead volunteers with mission alignment rather than merely requests for assistance. When they feel like they belong to a movement, teens and young adults are far more inclined to volunteer. Describe positions in detail: outreach leads, moderators, peer listeners, content producers, and operations support. Instead of starting with a big, unmanageable group, start with a small, trustworthy core team. Strong early recruitment channels include universities, psychology departments, youth organizations, and mental health clubs.

Instead of becoming ostentatious, promotion should be motivated by ideals. Share anecdotes (with permission), instructional materials, and frank messages on mental health, such as "you're not alone, and support exists" rather than "we fix everything." Although social media sites like Reddit, Instagram, and TikTok can be quite effective, consistency and trust are more important than virality. Your reach will grow more quickly through partnerships with schools, counselors, community organizations, and already-existing nonprofits than through solo promotion.

Lastly, as the founder, safeguard yourself. It might be therapeutic to create something based on your own suffering, but it can also be emotionally draining. Don't become your only source of support; instead, put systems in place that let you take a step back when necessary. A sustainable impact requires a sustainable leader.

You don't have to know everything at once. Begin modestly. Build securely. Learn quickly. Grow with purpose. You're thinking like someone who wants to do something well, not just quickly, and that's exactly how meaningful NGOs are established, based on the fact that you're already asking these questions.

Best wishes!

Martha D.’s Answer

Hi Lily - I join Chinyere in commending you for wanting to harness your suffering to do good for others. And she has given you excellent advice. In particular, I want to reiterate ensuring safety and beginning modestly. Chinyere notes that the trust and emotion of your patients, your counselors, and yourself must be protected as you face strong emotions. Without further training, you may not have the tools to deal with these emotions so seek assistance or at least advice in this area.
Regarding beginning modestly, she suggested starting as a referral service for existing resources. This is a good idea because it lets you get started quickly, learn more about the field, and help clarify your niche. You may even want to work or volunteer at one of these agencies to further educate yourself. Links to some low-cost or free mental health organizations in Chicago are below - there appear to be many more.
Wishing you good luck!

Thank you for your question. Appreciate you passion and commitment to start a NGO
Below are a few suggestions:
1. Explore the need of young people l, find out what do they need. Define the requirements of the platform
2. Engage tech specialist to design and develop the platform
3. Promote the platform on the social media
4.. Engage other NGOs to promote the platform
You may consider the funding of the project, eg platform development & hosting, etc
Hope this helps! Good luck!
May Almighty God bless you!
