Kelley’s Answer

You are lucky that you know what kind of art you want to make. Take advantage of any classes you can take now instead of waiting past graduation. Sign up for all the art classes they offer at your school. That will help you put together an amazing portfolio. Research all scholarships programs that are available. The more education and skill sets you can master will put you at the top of of the list when they pass out the scholarships. Most colleges have a summer internship program that you can also use to get ahead. Take any classes they allow, to help build a great portfolio. Do some research and see if any of the colleges have a portfolio review day. It's a skill that takes a lot of practice. Do some mock meetings and practice, practice, practice. Lastly even if there are scholarships that aren't a perfect fit, apply for all of them and walk people through your book just like you will do at interviews.

Pierre’s Answer

It's fantastic to see that you have a clear vision for your future in fashion. Your passion is evident, and it's exciting to know you're ready to dive into this field.

The advice you've received is great and practical. I suggest keeping a sketchbook nearby to capture your ideas and sketches whenever inspiration hits. Stay curious and watch the world around you. Noticing trends, colors, and patterns will keep your creativity flowing.

Remember to explore resources like YouTube, Pinterest, and online courses to stay inspired. Many courses become affordable during sales.

Learning to sew is also a valuable skill. Understanding garment construction and the feel of different fabrics will be incredibly helpful. While new technologies emerge, knowing the basics of sewing, pattern making, and sketching will always be beneficial.

I wish you all the best in your fashion journey. I'm confident you'll do amazingly well!

Gustavo’s Answer

Hi Phynix,

I didn't study fashion design, but I thought about it for a while before choosing graphic design. Some fashion schools I remember are Parsons, Fashion Institute of Technology, University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins, Polimoda, and ESMOD. There are many more, check this list: https://ceoworld.biz/2025/04/06/best-fashion-schools-in-the-world-for-2025/

Keep in mind that studying, especially in the USA, can be costly. It's a good idea to watch YouTube videos of fashion school graduates sharing their experiences on work after graduating, as this is a very important thing to consider before applying for your degree. Since you're young, you should consider exploring different options. If you're sure about fashion, consider taking sewing or design classes to start building your skills and portfolio.

Congratulations on knowing what you would like to do as a career while in 8th grade! The fashion industry can be fun and challenging, continue focusing on making your designs and keep them organized/dated so when you look back you will remember when these ideas came about and you will also have a large portfolio. When it comes to the right school to attend, I’m not sure that I could direct you to a specific one, it may take a bit of research to ensure that you will get into the right environment to acquire the skills that you need to compete with the best, also it depends on where you would like to be geographically. Whatever decision you make, I would suggest that you pursue a degree in fashion as opposed to a trade only profession. That being said, because you are starting early, you will do well, I believe in you!

Below are my suggestions:

2. Learn fashion design techniques at your leisure time. There are resources online
3. Watch fashion shows of famous brands online and do window shopping when you have time.
4. Explore the review of famous design schools and the entry criteria

Edie’s Answer

I just read Rebecca's answer and agree with her. I'd add that if you can, try to get a part-time job in the retail fashion industry. Think about what kinds of designs interest you and see if there any clothing boutiques or stores in those areas (for example if you like men's designs or streetwear, look for places that have that.) Pay attention to the customers and the product. How do customers react to certain design elements? etc.

Another consideration is getting a job at a place like Macy's where you can learn the broader business side of design. Understanding what happens to a design AFTER you create it can help you as you mature into your career.
