Start with smaller companies! Especially local ones. They are typically not nearly as competitive as larger, household-name F500 companies. As well as that, you could look into volunteering somewhere, like a non-profit, for experience. I would research businesses in your area and contact them directly.

In San Francisco, the most competitive internships are usually in big tech and finance, so it’s smarter to look at smaller companies, startups, nonprofits, or local businesses. Roles in operations, marketing, customer support, or project coordination are often less competitive and still give you strong experience.

Focus on gaining practical skills rather than chasing big brand names. You can also email smaller companies directly and ask about summer opportunities; many internships aren’t even posted publicly.
