How to get into marketing internships and experiences?

I am going into marketing at Ohio State. I chose this university since it is in the middle of a big city and could have a lot of oppurtunities there rather than a smaller school somewhere rural. I was wondering how you find these opportunities and how you put yourself out there to get chosen to be apart of it? I want to be focused more on the digital side of marketing with these like social media to build businesses.

Hi Lainey! Big congrats on choosing Ohio State! It's a great idea to connect with a counselor there. They might know about some cool internship opportunities for you. Also, check out company websites or their career sections to see when internships start and when applications are due. Updating your LinkedIn with your experiences, school, and major is super helpful too. You can use it to find recruiters and ask them about their internship programs and how to apply. Good luck in your search for the perfect internship!

Willingness to put yourself out there is already a great mindset to start with! Look up on career fairs in the area, go for networking events that will expose you to people in the field, and connect with people on LinkedIn. If you find a company/role you're particularly interested in, take the initiative to write in to check if there are any internship opportunities. You would be surprise what doors these could open for you. Companies which are open to hiring fresh graduates are usually prepared for you to go through a learning phase so don't worry if you do not have much experience to show yet. First step is to show your keenness to learn and grow.

Getting into marketing internships, especially in a big city like Ohio State University, starts with researching opportunities and building your skills. Look for internships through your university’s career center, online job boards, or by reaching out directly to companies you’re interested in. To stand out, create a strong resume and portfolio that highlights your experience with social media, digital campaigns, or any projects you’ve done. Networking is also key—attend events, join marketing clubs, and connect with professionals on platforms like LinkedIn. Showing initiative, enthusiasm, and relevant skills will help you get chosen and give you practical experience in digital marketing.

I saw this remote internship on LinkedIn. Search for more, join marketing groups. https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/4384281364/

Follow inspiring people, grow your network, learn from their work. Becoming a writer was like a snowball slowly building. If you love it, you keep going. Hard work, but that’s half the fun!

If there’s anywhere in your area too that you think might be great to intern at, email them, tell them why you’re interested in them! My first copy editing job for a newspaper came from me emailing them after college and asking if I could even just make copies and sweep the floors or whatever they’d need in return for letting me watch their process. They ended up asking me to write and edit for them instead for many years. Opportunities are out there everywhere, you just gotta be a little bit of a hustler and always think creatively in how you can make yourself indispensable to them. As a nighttime freelancer for 20 years now, almost all of my work comes from past managers and colleagues - even from right out of college. Always remember that - if you’re positive, excited to dig in, and say yes to as many things you can to learn and gain versatility, it’ll continue to pay off years later!

Hi Lainey
You are in a great location to find internships! And you have been given some great advice by fellow mentors.

One additional thought for you to consider is to check with the university or the department chair of your major to better understand how internships are offered. There may be options for both for-profit and non-profit internships.

I worked for an organization in Columbus and was fortunate to have interns who worked with my marketing team. Our company had a specific team that worked with the university (and others) to identify interns for the summer and then made the connection to the various departments to match them appropriately.

I don't know what it looks like on the university side, but most likely there will be a formal prescribed process that you can join to apply, interview, and find a good match.

That’s a great choice! To find opportunities, start by networking; join marketing or business clubs at Ohio State, attend local events, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn. Look for internships or part-time roles with local businesses, as cities often have startups and agencies eager for help with digital marketing. To stand out, build a personal portfolio by creating content or managing social media for a small business, nonprofit, or even your own brand. Showcasing real-world results will make you more appealing to employers and help you gain confidence in your skills!

Roshini’s Answer

Landing a marketing internship is all about showing initiative and practical skills. Start by learning the basics, like social media, content creation, and simple analytics. If you lack experience, create your own opportunities—manage a small page, assist a club, or design a mock campaign. This becomes your portfolio. Seek opportunities through your university, job platforms, and by contacting companies directly. Networking is also key—connect with people on LinkedIn and attend events. Highlight your achievements on your resume and demonstrate enthusiasm and a desire to learn. Employers value these traits most in interns.
