How important are clubs for your time ?

Currently I'm a high school senior; I always see things talking about clubs whenever I am looking at colleges, online or in person, or on a tour when people are talking about certain things too. They seem cool and all, but how important are they actually? Are they an experience everyone should have, or are they just there to help you find a community if you haven't found one yet?

Thanks for asking an interesting question, Naglis.

As you noted, clubs are good for finding a community. However, they potentially are also good for pursuing an interest, broadening your horizons, and developing your leadership skills. Clubs are mentioned frequently in college admissions because they are in school and, therefore, may be more convenient to students than activities outside school are.

But clubs in school are not the only way to do any of these things. You may have friends from your neighborhood or place of worship, you may be learning on your own or from a job, and you may be developing leadership skills in sports or an outside activity.

If you think you may have missed out from not joining clubs in high school, you could try joining teams or clubs in college. Just be aware that the workload in college is often higher than in high school so don't get involved in too much at once. Wishing you good luck!

Hi Naglis,

Clubs can be helpful because they give students a chance to meet people, explore interests, and build skills like teamwork, leadership, and communication. Many students join clubs to try new activities, socialize, network, build community, or get involved on campus. You don’t have to limit it to joining clubs, though. You can also have a great college experience through part-time jobs, volunteering, sports, internships, or personal hobbies. The most important thing is finding activities that you enjoy and that help you grow.

Clubs can be an important part of college life, but they're not essential. Many students join clubs to meet new people and make friends, especially in their first year. Clubs are a good way to connect with others who have similar interests.

Besides social benefits, clubs can also help in other areas. Some focus on careers, hobbies, or volunteering, offering chances to gain skills and experiences not available in class. Joining a club can lead to leadership roles, which look good on resumes and help with personal growth.

However, not everyone joins clubs, and that's okay. Some people find their community through classes, part-time jobs, sports, or their friend group. Clubs are just one way to get involved. If something interests you, give it a try, but don't feel pressured to join if it's not for you.
