I'm still waiting for UCB and UCSD admission. My major at UCB is accounting, and for UCSD, my major is data science.

Hello Jay,
Your inquiry has gone through my weekly mail. It is a great question and connections matter as much as skills. Reach out to career village as frequently as possible for things you’re curious about. A short message asking for advice can open doors. From my international perspective because I do not live in North America don’t wait until you graduate to start learning. Free online courses, volunteering, or even small side projects can give you valuable experience. Remember that accounting you need to be an expert for manipulation with numbers and text and to have a good memory and very attention to details. My previous experience has been in Finance and Accounting, and to have a pleasure endeavor in your career path in this field you need to balance work and personal life - it is somehow a boring job :-)
It’s completely normal to feel uncertain about your future—most professionals didn’t have it all figured out at your age. Start by exploring what excites you, whether it’s solving problems, helping people, or creating something new. Every small step you take—like researching a role, shadowing someone, or trying a project—builds clarity over time.”

May the blessing follow you always!

Jay, congratulations on already being admitted to SJSU and waiting to hear back from UCB and UCSD, because having multiple options shows your hard work is truly paying off. If you end up at SJSU for business accounting, start preparing now by strengthening your math skills, learning basic accounting principles like debits, credits, and financial statements, and getting comfortable with Excel and QuickBooks since these tools will follow you throughout your coursework and career. If UCB comes through for accounting, their program is rigorous and competitive, so brushing up on economics and critical thinking now will help you hit the ground running. If UCSD accepts you for data science, start exploring Python, statistics, and data visualization tools like Tableau to give yourself a solid head start. No matter which school you choose, get involved early by joining business clubs, attending career fairs, and connecting with professors who can open doors to internships and mentorship opportunities. The Bay Area is one of the best places to study any of these fields because you're surrounded by top companies and professionals who are always looking for motivated students like you. Trust the process, stay prepared, and make the most of wherever you land!
