What is the first step to becoming an electrician?

What is the first step to becoming an electrician? I am in 10th grade, and have done a little electrical work over the past few summers. I plan to do this again this summer.

Congrats you have done the first step!

The first step is to get a job as an electrician. Next step is to keep your pay stubs to prove your hours on the job. Find a safe place to keep them because you will need them in order to prove your hours on the job when getting your license.

Next step would be to get a letter of recommendation from a master electrician or licensed electrician. This will give validation that your hours on the job were done with you doing actual electrical work and not sorting mail in the office. If you are touching material getting installed and working with tools in hand that counts as hours on the job. Sorting materials and doing logistics can count, but in order to get a license they want actual electrical work. An example would be, you take 4x4 boxes and install them where the light switch boxes go but you don't put any wires in them or any switches. This would count as electrical work. You take a bunch of 4x4 boxes off the truck when they get delivered and put them near the gang box, this would not count as electrical work, but could depending on the situation.

After this, make friends, try to get on more jobs, keep in touch with people in the business because that will be the rest of your career.

If you are doing this in the 10th grade, all I have to say is you are doing the right thing! Keep pushing in this direction and go as far as you can! Take the best opportunity at the time and keep thinking about where you want to be in the future!
