Once you are in medical school and nearing the end of your third year, you begin looking at what internships/residencies you may be interested in (both specialty and location). Getting good grades remains important, even in medical school, and test scores matter as well. As with medical school applications, it is good to have strong references, so working well with some professors is important. You will want to craft a message that makes the residency want to interview you that relates to what motivates you to want to be that kind of specialist.
The interview process itself is about being a genuine you. Speak from the heart and connect your core values to your career choice. Explain why you would be a strong resident and future specialist.
I do not think I would give different advice if you were interested in any other areas of medicine.
