What tips do you have on how I can narrow my career focus in healthcare to a specific field or practice?

I am a freshman in college at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, looking to pursue a career in healthcare or public health. The medical field is a very wide field with many options, and I am unsure of what exactly I want to focus on in my future career/medical school/internships.

Go on things like o*net or similar and look at descriptions of your potentials. Consider a healthcare job / recruitment page and look at what’s on there and dig into those. There are also many health TECH careers so if that’s an area of interests look at health tech specific job boards for ideas. Open the job descriptions, does it sound interesting? Aside from this, utilise your networks and approach a few people in different parts of the field - will they share the realities or ‘day in the life of’ or even better will they let you go and shadow them. I’ve offered advice to quite a few ‘random’ people who have approached me for more info on speech pathology

Hi Isabella,

I didn't realize I wanted to be a PA until I shadowed one. Try to find volunteer opportunities that might lead to shadowing chances later. Also, ask people you know if they can connect you with someone in the medical field who lets students shadow them. Shadowing is the best way to really understand what the job is like.

Hi Isabella,

You’re exactly where you should be right now: early, curious, and open. The challenge you’re facing isn’t a lack of direction; it’s actually too many options, which is very normal in healthcare. A more successful way is to narrow through exposure instead of using pressure, as opposed to attempting to "pick the right field" instantly.

Start by classifying healthcare into a few general categories and determining which one most naturally interests you:
- Direct patient care (medicine, nursing, PA, etc.)
- Public health & population-level impact (policy, prevention, global health)
- Research & science (labs, clinical research, data)
- Healthcare systems & operations (administration, health management)
You don’t need to choose one yet, just start testing them.

The most practical way to do this is through small, low-risk experiences:
- Volunteer in a hospital or community health setting
- Shadow different professionals (doctor, public health worker, etc.)
- Join campus organizations related to health or service
- Take introductory courses across different areas

Pay attention to your reactions:
- Which type for work gives you energy?
- What wears you out?
- Which settings are your favourites?

Don't undervalue the influence of informational discussions either. Asking people in various professions, "What does your day actually look like?" will help you quickly figure out what works for you. Another important note is that your choice only needs to be directionally correct, not flawless. After gaining more experience, many people improve their course in their second or third year.

If there is anything to remember, it is this:
Experience, not overthinking, is the source of clarity.
You are in a powerful position. Your focus will gradually become lot clearer if you remain curious, act, and reflect along the way.

Best wishes!

Have you thought about volunteering in the fields that you like? As a student, this would be a good time to do so, you can get your feet wet and gain experience. Try your local health department. Your local politician who sits on an healthcare committee. Try a church that has an healthcare ministry/pantry-as they may have mobile healthcare units come to the sites or a shelter. Go to your schools intern/extern office and see whats available. If there is an health fair at your school or neighborhood, check it out and network. Are you looking into indirect or direct healthcare positions? Nursing schools hammer home working in nursing homes:hospitals, sometimes you have to think outside the box. I hope this was helpful. .

Hello! Choosing a career path can feel overwhelming given the wide range of opportunities available. To help narrow your focus and gain clarity about your future, consider exploring a few practical strategies. Attending a career fair can be a good opportunity. Without the immediate pressure of securing a job, you can gather valuable information about various roles within the healthcare field. These events also offer opportunities to network with professionals and potentially open doors to future internships. If you already have specific interests—such as becoming a social worker or physical therapist—shadowing professionals in those roles can provide meaningful, firsthand insight into their day-to-day responsibilities and work environments. Additionally, volunteering at a hospital is another effective way to gain exposure to the healthcare field. This experience not only helps you better understand different career paths but also allows you to build connections and refine your interests. I hope this helps!
