Biotechnology scope.

I am Arwa from Pakistan, currently studying A-levels. I was quite certain about pursuing Biotechnology, as I planned to complete my BSc abroad. However, as I look into it now, due to some personal reasons, going abroad for my undergraduate studies seems difficult.

I am unsure about the scope of Biotechnology in Pakistan, which has left me feeling confused. I don’t know whether I should change my field to something with better opportunities within Pakistan, or continue with Biotechnology and try my best to pursue my Master's degree abroad later.

Hi Arwa,

I can sense you're feeling unsure, and that's completely normal. Take a deep breath. It's okay to feel confused when plans change. Many students face this situation, and it doesn't mean your career is at risk.

If you decide to stay in Pakistan for your BS, here's what to expect:

1. Opportunities in Pakistan
Biotechnology is growing here, though it's not as developed as in the US or Europe. Most jobs are in Pharmaceuticals, Agriculture, or Clinical Labs. While starting salaries might be lower than in fields like Computer Science, the need for specialized scientists is on the rise.

2. Planning for the Future
Staying in Pakistan for Biotech can be a smart choice if you want to pursue a Master's abroad. Attending top schools like NUST, QAU, or COMSATS can help you build a strong research profile. This makes you a strong candidate for scholarships like Fulbright or Erasmus later.

3. Considering a Switch
If your main goal is a high-paying job in Pakistan right after graduation, consider fields like Pharm-D or Software Engineering, which have more established job markets here.

My advice? If you love science, stick with Biotech. Four years will fly by, and studying locally lets you save money and gain experience before pursuing a Master's abroad.

You've got plenty of time to make this work.
Thank you comment icon Hey trevon! Thank you for the advice! Yess you are right about bachelors being affordable in Pakistan. I applied abroad, I have received about 7 offers with good scholarship yet they are not really affordable. I am currently waiting for more, if I do get an affordable option, I might go with it, or else I will do my Bachelors here in Pakistan from NUST. thanks a lot for your answer, I have things quite cleared out now✨ Arwa
