Hi Sean,
It's a good ambition to open a psychology clinic after receiving your PhD, but you need to approach it carefully instead of leaping right in. Obtaining postdoctoral and early-career clinical experience is usually the first step in the most successful approach. You can improve your therapy approach, understand client flow, insurance systems, documentation, and the day-to-day challenges of operating a practice by working in established settings. Additionally, it enables you to establish a professional network and credibility, both of which will be necessary in the future.
Determining your specialisation and service model is the next step after building that foundation. Choose your target audience (children, families, trauma clients, etc.) and the services you'll provide (individual treatment, assessments, group therapy, etc.). After that, you'll have to take care of the business side, which includes registering your clinic, learning about your state's licensure requirements, establishing insurance credentialing (or choosing private pay), and setting up scheduling, invoicing, and record-keeping systems.
Promoting awareness and creating a network of referrals are equally important. Many successful clinics expand through partnerships with educational institutions, medical professionals, community organisations, and other therapists. Additionally, you may start small, perhaps with a single individual office, and eventually evolve into a group clinic as demand increases.
Seeing this as both a clinical and an entrepreneurial journey, rather than just a clinical goal, is a necessary mentality shift. In addition to your therapeutic abilities, your success will depend on how well you handle operations, client satisfaction, and sustainability over time. If you take it step by step, first mastering the work, then building the structure, you’ll position yourself to create a clinic that is both impactful and sustainable.
Best wishes!
