Untapped University Resources?

What are some likely untapped resources at universities that could help connect me to opportunities off-campus, whether job opportunities or general community involvement? I am a music performance major looking for a way to get into the city and explore all of its vibrancy!

Chappell’s Answer

Professors usually have strong ties in their local communities, so try finding one who specializes in your area of interest. Connecting with alumni can also be really useful. It's amazing how eager people are to help out.

Hi Rose,

Think about what kind of opportunities you want. If your university has a career center, it's a great place to start. They might have local internships or roles that let you help the community. Also, check out university clubs for ways to get involved nearby. Don't forget to talk to professors who know the area well; they might know local businesses looking for students like you. Just be clear about what you're seeking and what you hope to gain. You're on the right path!

Stella’s Answer

If you're a music performance major, make sure to check out your university's alumni network, career center, faculty contacts, and community engagement office. These places can help you link up with local arts groups, performances, internships, volunteer spots, and mentors. Some of the best chances to get involved aren't advertised, so getting to know people and asking for introductions can quickly get you into the city's arts scene.

Anthony’s Answer

Hi Rose!

There are plenty of untapped resources across university administration. When I was in college, I had several opportunities arise simply by building relationships with admins/professors and just asking.

I'll give two examples. I was looking for an internship, and since I had a relationship with one of my professors, he would refer me positions that outside companies would ask of him. This led to me getting an internship.

Another example is when I was applying for grad school. Since the grad program was at the university I was currently attending, I just walked to the office where the grad administration was and began building a relationship with them. When it came time for me to apply, I had an advantage since they knew me and I wasn't just another resume in an application pool.

Simple actions like this bear far more fruit then they may initially appear.

Many professors, administrators, counselors, etc., they go into academics so they can help their students. Develop relationships with these people, as often they will lead to opportunities that are available, yet go unnoticed because students simply don't ask.

Hope this helps!
