Hello, there are many different types of careers in federal law enforcement. Special Agents (also know by their job series of 1811's) are probably the most sought after positions, but these positions usually require previous experience. Many individuals start out in support roles, or analyst roles to gain experience. It is important to note that for most 1811 positions, a candidate must be 37 or younger because you are required to have 20 years of service by the age of 57, hence why 37 is the maximum age. There are exceptions to this and waivers that are given out, but this is the general rule. USA Jobs is the best place to look, set up automatic notifications for the positions you are most interested in. Best of luck!

If you want to join the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or TSA later in life, use your degree to apply through USAJOBS.gov. Look for roles that match your experience and keep federal age requirements in mind. Many federal law enforcement jobs, like Federal Air Marshals or Criminal Investigators, usually require you to be appointed before age 37. Veterans often get waivers up to age 40. If you're older, don't worry. You can still have a fulfilling law enforcement career with DHS by becoming a Transportation Security Officer (TSO) or exploring roles in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has removed age limits for some positions. To get ready, stay physically fit, be prepared for a background check and medical exam, and emphasize leadership and critical thinking skills from your past work. These qualities can help you stand out as a strong candidate.
