How can I tell as a high school student that I'll be able to complete undergraduate and medical school without getting discouraged?

I'm currently in 11th grade, but I've wanted to become a pediatrician for as long as I can remember. I get stressed and burnt out somewhat easily, although I'm also an overachiever. Any advice if I'm worried about med-school?

What a great answer from Marisel! I have no medical training and so will add to Marisel answer from a general experience point of view. First, you will never know the answer to your question unless you try. If you think you want to be a pediatrician, take the classes needed to go down that path. If you end up getting there, great! If you change your mind, also great! Many people change paths as they walk down the journey of life. Second, any training you did for medical school will also be useful for a wide variety of alternative careers. In addition to course content, training. for med school will teach you to be focused and disciplined with your time. That will be useful for any career and other activities of life. Wishing you the best of life, to celebrate your successes, and to not be too hard on yourself.

Hi Keara, it is impossible to see the future and that same time it is unrealistic to think that there will be times that you will not be discouraged while getting through life's different trials. These trials will be found in whatever you do: school, career, marriage, parenting, maintaining relationships,... In other words, while you live life there are many moments of discouragement. There are times when it harder than others to lift yourself out of the discouragement, but you stand up and move on.

Do things that my husband labels self-care, these include stepping away from the discouraging situation and doing something(s) that will take your mind off the situation temporarily. For example, exercise or go for a long walk, pray, cook a favorite dish, go to a movie, listen to inspiring music or podcast. Then get a good nights rest and tackle the issue with a clear mind the next day.

The most important thing about medical school is consistent perseverance, if becoming a physician is really what you want. I have been a Ob/Gyne for 20+ years and have had many discouraging moments through medical school, residency training, as a practicing physician, but I cannot think of any other job for which I would exchange what I do.

Seriously think about becoming a physician. HONESTLY WRITE why you want to become a physician, knowing that it will a long road, many times, discouraging, and many times difficult. Also write what other careers are you interested in besides medicine and explore them to make sure you have no regrets.

Wishing you the best as you live life with all of its discouragements, yet, ultimately, overcoming them to come out on the other side loving this one and only life we have.
