What are the best ways to find volunteer opportunities related to American Sign Language? #Spring26

I am entering college this fall as an American Sign Language Interpreting major. I would love to find volunteer or paid opportunities related to this but have been unable to find any thus far. I am already mostly fluent in ASL and able to carry full conversations but have not yet learned the art of interpretation.

Finding volunteer and paid ASL opportunities as an incoming college student is very achievable once you know where to look! Start with your college itself — your ASL or Interpreting department likely has connections to local ASL community events, student organizations like an ASL Culture Club, and may post opportunities on a department bulletin board or listserv. Connect with your local ASL community by attending ASL coffee chats, ASL church services, or ASL social nights — these are informal gatherings where native signers welcome fluent students, and word-of-mouth there is incredibly powerful for finding opportunities. Organizations like the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and your state's Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) chapter often post volunteer needs and can connect you with mentors in the ASL interpreting field. Platforms like VolunteerMatch, Idealist, and Handshake (common on college campuses) let you search for ASL-related roles specifically. Since you're not yet trained in interpretation, focus on roles like ASL community event volunteer, ASL tutor, or communication support assistant — these build your skills ethically without stepping into professional interpretation before you're certified. Finally, reach out directly to local schools with ASL programs, community centers, or hospitals, as they sometimes have unpaid shadow or volunteer programs specifically designed for students in your position.
