What internships should I be looming at for after my freshman year When choosing a job that may cause you to travel what are the most important factors you should weigh in? #Spring26?

As I enter my freshman year, I know there are plenty of scholarships after your sophomore, but I wanted to find some for my freshman year and was wondering where I could find more of those. I also was considering doing a governmental position in cybersecurity which may cause me to travel and was wondering what factors I need to weigh in, especially due to family.

For travel, you will need to consider if you can get a visa to whatever country you may be sent to. Understanding those limitations will help you understand what your capabilities are.

If it's in country (where you live) then consider:
* Time away from family, pets, etc.
* Do you need a house-sitter/petsitter?
* Can you afford to pay out of pocket if the company does reimbursement only?
* Is travel something you would enjoy, or would it cause frustration as it disrupts your routines?

For internships:
* Don't just focus on large companies, small companies have great learning opportunities as well.
* Smaller companies give you a chance to test waters instead of drinking from the firehose off the bat.

Hope this helps!

Hi Brandon,

Creating a LinkedIn profile, even as a freshman, is a smart move for finding internship opportunities.

Government positions can be a great starting point. Working for a government organization might help you get a security clearance, which can allow you to work on important national issues. Having this clearance can make you more attractive to employers in the future. Many of these positions are only listed on the agency or organization’s own website, so it’s important to check the ones you’re interested in to see if they offer internships.

Consider part-time entry-level jobs that align with your career goals after college. For example, if you're interested in Tech Consulting or Cyber Consulting, a job at Geek Squad can be beneficial. It involves interacting with clients, selling services, and building tech skills. Or maybe a local hospital offers cyber internships?

Just some ideas to think about. Best of luck!

At this point, don't stress about finding the "perfect" internship. Instead, focus on gaining experience and learning new things. Here are some good opportunities to consider:

- Beginner cybersecurity internships, like summer programs or virtual internships
- Government student programs, such as Pathways, NSA, or CISA
- Tech-related roles, including IT support, coding, or data analysis
