What skills or experiences made the biggest difference in helping you succeed early in your career, and what would you recommend I start building now?
I’m a biological sciences student really interested in lab work, especially in product development for skincare or cosmetics. I’ve done coursework with lab techniques and data analysis, and I’m currently trying to break into internships. What skills or experiences made the biggest difference for you early on, and what would you recommend I start building now to be competitive?

Great question, and great tenacity! I had a similar start in a science field; I would say your willingness to learn would be the first skill to focus on. Although you may know the technical answer, there are many different ways to cook an egg (meaning you will learn so much more from other's experiences). Be open to criticism; if you are, you will grow exponentially.
If you have an eager mindset, managers and leaders will appreciate your work ethic. That is not to say to work fast just to work fast. Sometimes working fast causes mistakes to happen. So go at a good pace for you, and show that you listened to instructions, and you are someone your manager can rely on. This has taken me far in my career and in life.
I did not go into the cosmetics or skincare route, food development is (food science) is very similar, and I get to taste my creations. ;P I would recommend getting an internship at a biomed lab where the microbiology is tested for vitamins and other medicines. There are a lot of third party testing facilities to look into.
Lastly, but probably most important is to NETWORK. Get to know your co-workers, even if (especially), they are not in your same department. The more people you meet and know and talk to casually, the more your name will be brought into the rooms you are not in. This is how you can grow within you specialty, within and without the company you are currently working in.
Best of luck to you!
