Are there specific extracurricular activities in college I should pursue to enhance my chances of securing an engineering job when I graduate?
I am a high school senior preparing to start college in the Fall of 2026. I am majoring in biomedical engineering, but I really enjoy participating in extracurricular activities. Thank you.

Get involved in activities that give you real biomedical engineering experience, such as IEEE or the Biomedical Engineering Society, along with design teams, robotics clubs, medical device clubs, and hackathons where you work on team-based projects. Join skill-focused clubs like coding, AI/ML, CAD, and maker spaces, and take part in innovation challenges, startup weekends, and biomedical engineering design competitions to build technical depth and creativity. Gain hands-on experience through lab research groups, faculty-led projects, and internships or co-ops in biotech, medical device, or healthcare companies.
Include clinical exposure through hospital volunteering or shadowing healthcare professionals to understand how engineering solutions function in patient care. Build small projects like medical device prototypes or health-monitoring systems using MATLAB or Python to demonstrate technical ability and initiative. Attend engineering expos, biomedical conferences such as the IEEE EMBS Annual International Conference and BMES Annual Meeting, and university research symposia to learn about current developments and present your work. Network through club events, conferences, and speaker sessions to connect with professors, researchers, alumni, and industry professionals.
