Federico’s Answer

As others mentioned, projects and extracurricular activities is what helps the most to open your knowledge and set yourself aside from your peers! Could be many things, maybe look into some and see if there is something you would be interested in! I think what is important is doing something that a future employer will perceive as a way of you being curious, open to new activities, motivated and positive to new things!

I'd suggest you volunteer at various food shelves and shelters. Ask if you can take photos of the food (not the people). Perhaps you can use some of those photos to showcase your skills and you will be able to add that you believe in supporting others.

Also ask your friends, relatives, and neighbors if they know of places that would welcome an amateur photographer to offer taking photos pro bono (at no cost) which ultimately could turn into a position.

With every good wish and many blessings,
Karen

I would say build a strong social media following and gather positive testimonials from various restaurants. Show off your work with different restaurants / cafes on a portfolio website. Also, consider how AI image generation tools might impact your work!

Fanny’s Answer

Hi Abigail,

If you want to become a professional food photographer, one of the best things you can do is build skills beyond just taking photos. Learning editing software, social media marketing, basic graphic design, video creation, and content strategy can make you much more valuable to employers and clients. Try working with small restaurants, bakeries, cafés, or local businesses to build your portfolio and gain real experience. Networking online and posting your work consistently can also help attract opportunities and collaborations. The more creative and adaptable your skill set is, the easier it will be to stand out in a competitive field.

Selena’s Answer

Hello Abigail,

You can stay updated on new social media trends and go to restaurants to offer your photography services professionally. It is also important to understand how the food business works while building marketing strategies for your own personal brand, you can start your own page on Instagram for example. Also, learning food styling, short-form video creation, and social media content production can help you become a more versatile professional.

Good luck! :)

Gaia’s Answer

Hi Abigail,

You can create a profile on the website called Fiverr (https://www.fiverr.com) and you can mention you want to gain experience in this field. What you can do is offer a pack of services (set up with lights, backgrounds etc + photos + videos + editing - it does not have to be exactly like this, but it is an idea to be taken more seriously). Then, if I were you, since you are starting, I would offer a competitive price to be selected over other people working in this field. Once you get more experience, you will be able to increase your tariffs.

One tip: since Fiverr asks you to showcase your content, you should take some pictures in your kitchen, look at pinterest to find some inspiration for this kind of pictures. And then post it.

Additionally, you can also go to small-sized restaurants or bars and ask to take pictures of their food for free so that they can post them in their social media platforms.

Hope this helps!

Try working with local chefs and stylists to mix up your experience. Offer free services to nearby businesses, reach out to brands on Instagram, and concentrate on using top-notch, steady lighting. Look for photography forums where you can share your projects, get advice, and connect with people who can support your work. Hope this helps!
