It's fantastic that you've already found your passion for healthcare!

Answering this question can be a bit tricky because it depends on the setting. In outpatient care, you might see many kids each day due to numerous appointments. In inpatient care, it varies by floor. On general floors, nurses usually care for a few patients at once, around 2 to 4. In the ICU, the nurse-to-patient ratio is stricter, with nurses usually looking after just 1 or maybe 2 patients at a time.

Hi Kyela, it's fantastic that you already want to be a pediatric nurse. You're still young, so there's no rush to figure everything out. Keep working hard in school, stay curious, and continue being kind and helpful. These are wonderful traits for someone who wants to care for children.

It's perfectly fine if your interests change as you grow. Keep learning about nursing, ask questions, and focus on subjects like science and math that will help you later. Most importantly, believe in yourself and enjoy your childhood while you work toward your dreams. You have plenty of time, and you're already on a great path.

Even though I'm not a pediatric nurse, I understand that the type of nursing you choose makes a big difference. For instance, in a pediatric emergency room, you might care for more patients than in an intensive care unit (ICU) because the level of care needed varies. Patients in the ICU often need more attention because they are very sick, while those in the ER might need less intensive care.

If you work in the ER, you might have the chance to help more patients. In the ICU, you might focus on just one or two patients who need a lot of care. Some nurses in the ICU may even care for just one patient at a time.

Since you're still young, you have plenty of time to explore different areas of pediatric nursing. Consider learning about different types like outpatient, ICU, ER, or NICU. Find out what interests you the most, and don't hesitate to ask questions about those specific areas.

A great way to learn more is to talk to a nurse during your next doctor's visit. Ask them why they chose their field and what other options they considered. People usually enjoy sharing their experiences and offering advice when asked.
