Is AI silently ending human creativity?
Artificial Intelligence is growing rapidly every year. Today, I learned artificial intelligence could create HTML code to handle the front-end part of a website; way better than I ever could writing the code myself. This compels me that AI is the end of human creativity, because it produces tasks with superb quality without having to use critical thinking or creativity. I wanted to become a software developer, but now I feel I need to change careers because AI practically took my job.

I don't think AI will replace human work anytime soon. As a Software Engineer, I use AI a lot, but it still makes mistakes. I'm currently building a web app, and while AI has been helpful, it's also led me astray a few times, especially in areas I'm less familiar with. So, using critical thinking with AI is really important. You can build things faster, but you might also make mistakes faster.
As for creativity, it depends on how people use AI. Creativity is about having ideas, and AI can handle the tough, boring parts. If you just tell AI to "build an app that does X," it'll create something it's done many times before. But if you have a unique idea and need help, AI can be a great ally.
Remember, AI is trained on past data, which makes it seem capable of anything, but it can't truly create something new. Also, don't rely on AI as your only source of information. It can be biased and might make it seem hard to think differently.

As far as I have seen, AI does not have good taste today, so I think it's likely that there will always be a place for a human in building software. Product manager is a title for people who are figuring out what to build, and checking if what the AI built matches the idea.
Software engineers are also likely to be needed for a very long time. Writing HTML to make a website that looks like another website is mostly handled, but AI today often does not produce the most efficient code, or may not produce code that will continue working as more and more changes are made, which is what human software engineering has spent a lot of effort on. Getting good at reviewing code made by AI or humans is likely to be worth your time, if you work hard at it.

Knowing a language is only part of the problem. Being able to build complex systems that can talk to each other, are resillient and can scale is a whole other level where a software developer is needed.
Another component that AI can't fully learn is the domain of a certain industry. Understanding the nuances of business function that isn't documented is where AI will fail to help a developer code around.
Once you become an experienced developer, AI can help you excel similarly to how a calculator can help an accountant.

For example, if I were making a game for my nieces and nephews, AI could help me design the board or figure out the rules and spot any I missed. It won't create the game exactly as I want or ensure it's age-appropriate on its own. I need to bring my ideas to the table and work with AI.
Think of AI as a friendly, non-judgmental buddy that gives honest feedback. If you ask for its help, it can make you even more creative.
From a perspective of the job. AI doesn't (yet) do so well at thinking creatively. I think a lot of the code it generates is sub-par, and you still have to understand the jargon/conventions to make AI perform appropriately. If you can use what you know to accurately describe your desired outcomes, and have the knowledge to review the output, you'll have a job. AI falls down in the face of complexity and nuance.

AI is genuinely excellent at execution, generating code, recognizing patterns, and producing outputs at speed. What it cannot do is decide what's worth building, and why. It doesn't understand value, nor can it measure it. This requires human judgment, which demands contextual relevance, outcomes that help people get their jobs done, ethics and moral balance, and strict adherence to what is right and good, with trust as a non-negotiable tenet. AI cannot reliably address these challenges, and when it can't, it will attempt to infer them or literally fall back on fabrication. The people who define the problem and ask the right questions before a single line of code is written will always be essential. The engineers who ask the right questions and bring the right insights to guide AI are skills you can deliberately develop as a software developer and systems engineer. That will make you more valuable, not less.
Here's the deeper truth:
AI is not intelligence. It builds upon human intelligence. Large Language Models are probabilistic by nature: they drift, they hallucinate, they require human oversight to stay grounded. They will never represent certainty. Every serious deployment of AI today requires people who understand why a system is behaving the way it is and what to do when it doesn't. That's you, if you choose it.
The problems AI is solving today are largely operational — faster, cheaper, more efficient. Those are not the hard problems. The genuinely hard problems facing our civilization involve complexity that overwhelms any model: sustainability, trust, governance, and human cooperation across differences. Solving those will require great engineering (physical, digital, and the evolving biological) combined with the humanities, ethics, and long-term thinking that profit-driven models have consistently undervalued.
AI won't replace people who can think across those boundaries. It needs them.
So don't abandon software development. Learn to work with AI as a force multiplier, and invest in the judgment, ethics, and systems thinking that no model can replicate. That's where the irreplaceable work lives.

First off, I really feel you. I have a son younger than you and he was dreaming of a career in cybersecurity which is seemingly going up in smoke
right now. But then what I see happen jng on my organization I would say that future you are describing isn’t written yet. True AI has amazing skills but then there were always better kids and smarter brains around us and it didn’t stop us from finding our place in the world. I think there are big changes at play which is in the hands of politicians and big corporate players, and that is outside our influence to a large degree. And then there is what we can do as individuals. And my advice is to lean into it, embrace it and see the AI as your smart colleague (or co-founder if are inclined towards entrepreneurship). Let your creativity flow and let AI do the legwork. Or use it as a sparring partner to bounce off your ideas. I really think it has the potential to make us dumber or feel useless if we let it. But if we embrace it I truly believe we can also do so much more and go much further then before.
I know it is a topic that divides people, and I have no crystal ball. But that is my advice to my son as well - embrace it, use it to do more, go further, learn more in less time and so on. There is a part of the future that is not up to us. But this is what I believe is the best course of action right now.

AI can generate code, but it still needs humans to decide **what should be built, why it matters, how it should work, whether it is safe, and whether it actually solves a real problem**. That part still needs creativity, judgment, and responsibility.
I don’t think AI is ending human creativity. I think it is changing the tools creative people use. A calculator did not end math, cameras did not end art, and AI will not end software development. It just means developers will need to become better problem-solvers, not just code writers.
For tech careers that are harder for AI to fully replace, I would look at areas where human judgment matters a lot, such as cybersecurity, cloud engineering, solutions architecture, AI governance, product management, UX research, data engineering, and AI infrastructure. These jobs involve trust, strategy, communication, decision-making, and understanding people or complex systems.
So I would not give up on becoming a software developer. Instead, learn how to use AI as part of your workflow. Learn the basics deeply: programming logic, databases, APIs, debugging, security, cloud, and how users think. Then build projects that show you can solve real problems, not just copy code.
The safest path is not to ask, “What job can AI never touch?” because every job will be affected in some way. A better question is, “How can I become the kind of person who can use AI better than others?” That is where the opportunity is.

I get it, watching AI write code faster than you could ever do is intimidating. But think about it this way: AI can write the code, it just can't decide what to build or why it matters. That part is still yours.
I create proofs of concept in my work, and AI has been a game changer for speed — what used to take me days I can now explore in hours. But the vision? The end-to-end thinking? That's still coming from me. AI just helps me get there faster.
Honestly, without AI I couldn't build personal projects the way I do now — I use it like a co-worker who can jump between product manager, QA, and backend developer. It's incredible. But I'm still the one driving.

I don't think AI is ending human creativity. However it’s changing how creativity is expressed. AI can generate code, images, and text, but it still relies on humans to define problems, make decisions, and create something meaningful from those outputs.

Next, is your creative output only going to be represented using HTML code? Is the only way you can create is through HTML? No one who is a front end developer is really doing it solely using HTML code. Front end developers right now are editing HTML, writing in JavaScript, familiar with PHP, working with some simple database, using CSMs, using all sorts of pictures/ icons/ fonts/ videos, and starting to learn some cybersecurity on top of everything. This means it is not a simple job and AI could help them a little manage and create a little better.
Once you learn more about coding, you'll start to see AI really needs you more than you think. Someone is definitely going to need to review the code it generates and make updates to the system. Software developers in the future may even need to develop systems used by AI that aren't even invented yet (actually that is really likely). So relying on a job doing HTML in the 2020's is not going to happen, but will we need to hire people that are fluent in CUDA, Rust, or Go in the near future? Yes! That is a definite and it will require at least some human eyes to look at the code.
AI can help manage and create, not replace and dominate.
I just sat down with a good friend of mine yesterday who specializes in UI and web design. They are in the process of getting jobs and trying to sharpen their skills as they go. They wanted to know more about AI because they know they will need it, but the "why" for needing it right now is really muddy. I demonstrated thing it can do and pointed them to some ideas and minor projects so they can be useful with it in the future, avoiding text fluff and slop pictures. I pointed out how it can just be used as a mock up design tool where it can make some non or semi-functional design pages as fast as the idea is being discussed with a client. Just having something like that is a game changer when doing scratchpad ideas!
