Alexandra’s Answer

I went from public to industry and came back to public for several reasons. First, I like the variety of client issues I encounter in public and how it is a dynamic experience of constant learning. Second, I like a challenge. Third, I like working with some of the best accountants in the world and having the opportunity to work with different teams on different projects.

Jason’s Answer

My switch from public was not that intentional. I always thought I would become partner at an accounting firm but an opportunity to work as an independent consultant/contractor came my way so I took the chance. At that time, my plan was to grow that network and then maybe start my own practice. But after three years of working with same client, I decided to take position with that company.

For me te biggest appeal to public was variety of clients and work, along with the constant problem solving and issue resolution. But that can still be found in private but usually at more senior levels. So it really depends on what drives you.

In general, public is more intense work schedule and constant up or out career progression. Private is more routine (but not always) and you can stay at same level much longer. Most of the people on my teams that have come from public do it for better balance. Pay difference really depends on company and level.

Abbie’s Answer

Hi Andy,

I started my career in public accounting and it was a great experience. I was able to learn so much in such a short period of time and meet some great people along the way. When I moved to a different city, I decided I was ready to go into industry. I was looking for more work/life balance and to be on a consistent team where I can grow within the company. I don’t think I would have been given my current opportunity without public accounting experience though!

Dylan’s Answer

Before starting my career in public accounting I completed internships at public and private companies. I decided to switch to public accounting because of the knowledge and training I received. There is so much to learn from public accounting. Additionally, I really appreciated the firm culture. The people I work with are amazing.

Elizabeth’s Answer

I began my professional journey as an auditor at a public accounting firm. This role allowed me to gain extensive knowledge, as I worked with various balance sheet accounts. This experience accelerated my understanding of accounting and aided in my preparation for the CPA exam. Eventually, I transitioned to working in private companies, where I appreciated focusing on a single organization rather than multiple clients. However, my exposure to different aspects of accounting was limited in the private sector, as I often worked on specific areas like revenue or consolidation. Consequently, my learning and growth were not as rapid as they were in a CPA firm.

I have now returned to working at a CPA firm, where I continue to expand my expertise by engaging with diverse clients and industries. This contrasts with the private sector, where my exposure was limited to a single company.

My initial switch from public to private accounting was motivated by the desire to reduce travel and focus on family life. As an auditor, I frequently traveled to various locations. However, with the increased availability of remote work options, I have happily transitioned back to public accounting as a remote employee.

Simeon’s Answer

One of the more common career paths is to build experience at a public accounting firm, go up the ladder, and then switch to private or government accounting at a similar position.
