Hey Jaden,
I'll share some general advice on getting into a new field.
- Learn as much as you can from the outside. Focus on areas that help you speak the language of the industry and understand what professionals are focused on right now. Find the content that they consume and spend time with it.
- Attend events to network and support your learning. As a student, you may be able to find opportunities to get discounted or free passes to conferences or events. Follow up on good conversations and be ready to show genuine interest in the field.
- Start doing the work where you can, even if it's just for yourself. Build a portfolio of projects. As your network develops, you can get feedback on projects. AI can be a helpful critic too to push your work.

Fashion is an exciting and rewarding field, but it is also fast-paced and constantly evolving. It requires curiosity, resilience, adaptability, building leadership skills and a willingness to keep learning. The fact that you’re interested in exploring the industry is already a great first step.
Since you’re unsure where to start, begin by exploring the various areas of fashion, including apparel design, pattern making, merchandising, sustainability, fashion marketing, fashion law, supply chain management and entrepreneurship etc. As you learn more, you’ll discover which path aligns best with your interests. Once you’ve identified a direction, you’ll have a clearer idea of the specific skills to develop, the events or conferences to attend, and the professionals to connect with.
Watching fashion professionals and creators can also be valuable. Pay attention not only to their work but also to how they build relationships, collaborate with others, and grow their careers. Seek volunteer opportunities or start personal projects to gain hands-on experience and expand your network.
Remember, you don’t need to have everything figured out at the beginning. Stay open-minded, keep learning, and build your knowledge and connections one step at a time.
