Hi Jyniah! Yes, a culinary education can take you in many different directions, including owning your own business.

I earned a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management and studied Culinary Management and Operations. I later opened my own personal chef company and had the opportunity to work with amazing clients, including professional athletes. My career also took me into the luxury kitchen-appliance industry, and I eventually decided to pause my business to work with brands I truly loved—Bosch, Thermador, and Gaggenau.

My experience taught me that your degree is only the beginning. When you love what you do, life can surprise you and take you down different paths within your own career. Your skills, passion, experience, and relationships can open doors you never imagined.

If owning a business is your dream, learn both sides: culinary arts and business management. Learn to cook, but also learn food costs, finances, marketing, customer service, and leadership.

Follow what you love, stay open to new opportunities, and don't be afraid if your career takes a different direction than you originally planned. Sometimes those unexpected opportunities become the best part of your journey. 👩‍🍳

Thank you for your question. I am glad to know you have interest in culinary arts.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Learn more cooking techniques online.
2. Do more practise. Practise makes perfect!
3. Explore the entry criteria of famous culinary schools, e.g. Le Cordon Bleu, École Ducasse, The Culinary Institute of America, etc. and work hard to meet the criteria
4. Look for intern opportunities working in famous Michelin restaurants
5. Work in the culinary business some time to understand the business model and establish people network
6. Before starting your own restaurant, attend management courses
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
May Almighty God bless you!

Hi Jyniah!Having your high school diploma gives you a clean slate to build an incredible career in food—and yes, you can absolutely go as far as owning your own global business empire if you want to!

1. Degrees You Can PursueDiploma / Certificate (6–12 months): Quick, hands-on training to learn fundamental knife skills, food safety, and kitchen prep.Associate Degree in Culinary Arts / Baking (2 years): The standard route at community colleges or culinary schools. You’ll learn culinary techniques, menu planning, nutrition, and kitchen management.Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management, Food Science, or Business (4 years): Ideal if you want to run corporate dining, manage high-end resorts, or start a major brand.

2. Can You Own Your Own Business?Absolutely! But here is the secret: great cooking gets customers in the door, but smart business keeps the doors open. Many successful chefs pair culinary training with basic courses in accounting, marketing, and leadership.

3. Inspiring Examples of Chefs Who Went Big
Steve Ells (Chipotle): Graduated from the Culinary Institute of America. He opened a tiny burrito shop to fund his dream restaurant and ended up turning Chipotle into a multi-billion-dollar global fast-casual giant!
Roy Choi (Kogi BBQ): Trained at top culinary schools and pioneered the modern gourmet food truck movement, showing that you don't need a fancy restaurant to build a food empire.
Gordon Ramsay & Wolfgang Puck: Both built global restaurant groups, television networks, cookware lines, and bestselling books starting right from kitchen line-cook roles.

Good luck on your journey ahead!

Jeff’s Answer

Hi Jyniah,

If you're serious about this field, the best next step is to get hands-on experience. Working in the industry will help you understand daily operations, customer needs, workflow, and real challenges. Employers like candidates who know how things actually work.

Also, consider taking some basic business courses at a local community college. Classes in accounting, marketing, and small-business management provide the skills and vocabulary you need to grow and move into higher roles. Community colleges are affordable, offer flexible schedules, and focus on practical skills.

By combining real-world experience with business education, you'll be in a stronger position. It shows initiative, builds credibility, and gives you the foundation to advance. If you want, I can help you find industry roles or community college classes.

Sarah’s Answer

Absolutely! A culinary education can lead to a wide variety of careers, and yes, many people build successful businesses with it.

I attended culinary school while I was in high school, and my classmates have taken many different paths. Some became executive chefs in restaurants, others became private chefs for affluent families or celebrities, while others opened food trucks, catering companies, bakeries, meal prep businesses, or their own brick-and-mortar restaurants.

A culinary program teaches much more than how to cook. You'll learn recipe development, menu planning, scaling recipes for different group sizes, food safety and sanitation, proper food storage and handling, nutrition fundamentals, knife skills, kitchen operations, inventory management, and how each role in a professional kitchen works together. Many programs also prepare students to earn a ServSafe certification, which is highly valued in the food service industry.

If you continue your education after high school, you have several options, including:

Culinary Arts (Certificate, Associate's, or Bachelor's)
Baking and Pastry Arts
Hospitality Management
Restaurant and Foodservice Management
Nutrition or Food Science
Business Administration or Entrepreneurship, which pairs especially well with culinary training if you hope to own a business

As for owning your own business, absolutely. Many culinary professionals become entrepreneurs by opening restaurants, bakeries, cafés, food trucks, catering companies, personal chef businesses, meal prep services, specialty food brands, or even creating online cooking classes and social media content.

How far can culinary arts take you? That depends less on the degree itself and more on your passion, work ethic, business skills, and willingness to keep learning. Some chefs spend their careers working in restaurants they love. Others become executive chefs, culinary instructors, food scientists, restaurant owners, television personalities, cookbook authors, or successful entrepreneurs with multiple locations.

One piece of advice I would offer is to learn both the culinary side and the business side. Many restaurants don't struggle because the food isn't good. They struggle because of challenges with budgeting, staffing, marketing, pricing, or operations. Understanding finance, customer service, and entrepreneurship can give you a significant advantage if your dream is to own a business one day. Creative marketing is essential.

If cooking is something you genuinely enjoy, culinary arts can provide a fulfilling career with many different directions. Your career doesn't have to look like anyone else's. You can build a path that fits your own interests, whether that's creating incredible meals, serving your community, or becoming a business owner.
