I was an English major too, and I thought I'd become a professor or a reporter. But my career took unexpected turns, and I ended up in places I never imagined while in school. I started with proofreading, moved into proposal writing, and now I'm in marketing, creating web copy, scripts, and social media posts. I even had the chance to teach English at an art school. Your English degree is more versatile than you might think.
Here are some career paths you can explore:
- Education: teaching, tutoring, ESL
- Business: marketing, PR, technical or proposal writing, editing
- Creative: journalism, publishing, copywriting, screenwriting, content creation
Skills you should consider developing:
- Writing in various formats like blogs, scripts, and social media posts
- Editing and proofreading
- Basic digital skills like SEO, WordPress, and social media
Stay curious and open-minded—your career might surprise you in amazing ways. You've got this!

An English major can lead to many careers beyond teaching. The skills you develop in writing, communication, research, and critical thinking are valuable in many industries.
Some career paths you can consider include content writing, copywriting, editing, publishing, digital marketing, public relations, corporate communications, human resources, customer success, journalism, translation, technical writing, social media management, and administrative or business support roles. If you are interested in education, you can also pursue teaching or academic research.
Before you graduate, you should focus on building practical skills that employers look for. Improve your writing and editing, public speaking, presentation, and communication skills. Also, try to gain real-world experience through internships, volunteering, freelance work, or personal projects. For example, you could write articles, manage a social media page, start a blog, or help a nonprofit with communications. These experiences will strengthen your resume and help you stand out to employers.

You can become a technical writer like me. I started with a major in English, hoping to be a creative writer, but I found my way into this career and I love it. I write for industries like aerospace, IT, fintech, and infrastructure, and I have no regrets. If you're an English major and want to explore this field, consider careers that use strong communication skills in practical ways. Jobs like technical writing, content strategy, UX writing, editing, public relations, and grant writing are great choices. These roles appreciate clear writing, research, and explaining ideas well. Having a background in structured documentation makes tech-focused jobs even more achievable. Before you graduate, work on building a strong writing portfolio and improving your writing, editing, and research skills. Learn digital tools like Markdown, WordPress, and basic HTML, and get experience with content design, SEO, and project communication. These skills will open up both creative and career opportunities for you when you enter the job market.
