How do you get your very first paying client when starting a new service business?

I recently started a small business offering language services (translation, interpretation, and language training), but I haven't been able to land my first client yet. For experienced entrepreneurs or B2B sales professionals: What is the most effective way to reach decision-makers, build trust quickly, and secure that initial contract when you don't have a long list of past references?

Thank you comment icon To land your first B2B language client without references, you must remove the buyer's risk through hyper-targeted, personal outreach:Solve a specific friction point: Don't sell generic "language services." Target niche buyers like immigration law firms, clinical trials, or cross-border factories who face immediate financial or legal risk from miscommunication.Offer a free proof-of-concept: Audit a prospect's localized website. Find a translation error, fix it for free in your pitch, and offer to translate their next 500 words at no cost to prove your speed and accuracy.Borrow credibility: Highlight your team's personal certifications (like ATA or court credentials). Partner with web dev or global marketing agencies to offer a 10% referral fee for warm introductions. Clarence

Donna’s Answer

King Luke;

I am by no means an expert in small or independent business practices. I have enjoyed the security of a large corporation for most of my career life.

Just a suggestion, as I can imagine it is hard to build clientele list. I recently read a book which shared a story of a young woman and her path to becoming a public speaker, life coach. Prior to being paid for events, she would speak for free at various venues. In turn she would post pictures from the event and get individuals who attended the event to provide feedback on social media.

She did say it was a struggle to determine when to go from speaking for free to charging clients.
